Fargo Force, Chicago Steel Remain Best In USHL

Find out which of the league's 16 teams rise and fall over the course of the long regular season.

1. Fargo Force / Last Ranking: 1

Record: 30-8-1-3

The Force faced a critical three-game stretch last week, including a two-game homestand against Lincoln, and won all three games.

Fargo has points in their last nine games and is 8-1-1-0 over their last ten games. They own by far the best winning percentage (.762) in the USHL.

Owen Mehlenbacher has proven to be an excellent addition, collecting seven points (three goals, four assists) in six games, including the game-winner last Friday.

2. Chicago Steel / Last Ranking: 2

Record: 28-13-2-1

The Steel look like themselves again after a shaky restart out of the holiday break. 

Despite its six-game win streak ending on Sunday, Chicago is 6-3-1-0 over its last ten games.

Macklin Celebrini was named USHL Forward of the Week for the second consecutive week after potting seven goals and eight points in his last three games. 

3. Waterloo Black Hawks / Last Ranking: 3

Record: 27-14-1-0

Despite dropping their last two games, Waterloo is holding second in the Western Conference.

The Black Hawks are 6-3-1-0 over their last ten games, but their penalty kill (73.5 percent) has dropped to third-worst in the league after giving up three goals on six chances over the weekend.

Garrett Schifsky has picked it up offensively since the calendar flipped to February, collecting six points (three goals, three assists) in his last seven games.

4. Green Bay Gamblers / Last Ranking: 7

Record: 25-15-1-1

Green Bay saw its three-game win streak end on Saturday in Muskegon, but they remain in striking distance of the first-place Steel.

Mike Leone’s squad features the league’s best penalty kill (84.3 percent) and has gone 6-4-0-0 over their last ten games.

Kristoffer Eberly is second in the league with 18 wins, along with a 2.93 goals-against average.

5. Lincoln Stars / Last Ranking: 4

Record: 25-16-2-0

After a rough week, Lincoln drops one spot in these power rankings. The Stars went 0-3-1-0 in their four games last week, dropping both contests against first-place Fargo.

Lincoln has gone 6-3-1-0 over its last ten games and faces a home-and-home series with Sioux Falls this weekend.

With two more points on Sunday, Mason Marcellus has 12 multi-point games on the season.

6. Youngstown Phantoms / Last Ranking: 6

Record: 23-13-4-1

The Phantoms sit in third place in the Eastern Conference with 51 points and three games in hand on Chicago.

Youngstown has points in its last five games and have gone 7-2-1-0 over their last ten games.

Jacob Fowler earned his seventh shutout of the year on Saturday, setting a new franchise record.

The Phantoms kick off this week’s slate of games with an outdoor contest against Cedar Rapids in Cleveland. 

7. USNTDP / Last Ranking: 5

Record: 23-12-1-2

Back from their international break, the USNTDP saw their eight-game win streak end on Saturday.

However, the U17 squad got back on track on Sunday with an 8-5 win in Chicago, led by Cole Eiserman’s hat trick.

James Hagens paces all U17 skaters with 31 points in 24 games, while Gabe Perreault continues to pace the U18 skaters with 28 points in 14 games.

8. Tri-City Storm / Last Ranking: 11

Record: 20-16-2-3

The Storm took both games over the weekend and have points in their last three games and seven out of their previous ten.

Tri-City sits in fourth place in the Western Conference and looks poised to continue their ascent in the standings.

A two-game homestand against Sioux City awaits next weekend.

9. Cedar Rapids RoughRiders / Last Ranking: 9

Record: 19-16-4-2

After a strong start after the holiday break, it’s been rough going for Cedar Rapids, who are 3-5-1-1 over their last ten games.

The RoughRiders picked up a good win against Waterloo on Saturday but dropped another game to the Steel on Friday, in which they allowed three powerplay goals.

Ryan Walsh continues to piece together a strong resume as a 2023 NHL overage draft prospect, collecting six points (three goals, three assists) over his last four games.

10. Dubuque Fighting Saints / Last Ranking: 8

Record: 20-17-3-1

Dubuque has dropped four straight, and they’re now closer to last place in the Eastern Conference than first place.

The Fighting Saints have gone 3-5-2-0 over their last ten games and own the league’s third-worst powerplay conversion (17.1 percent).

Ryan St. Louis has 43 points in 37 games this season, but he’s been quiet lately, collecting just two assists over his last five contests.

11. Sioux City Musketeers / Last Ranking: 10

Record: 19-18-2-3

The Muskies are holding onto a playoff spot, and Sunday’s thrilling win over Lincoln was certainly impressive.

Sioux City has gone 4-6-0-0 over its last ten games and has the seventh-fewest goals (135) in the league.

Dylan Godbout tallied his first career USHL hat trick over the weekend, but the Musketeers need other players to start producing offensively. 

12. Sioux Falls Stampede / Last Ranking: 12

Record: 16-21-4-3

The Herd have dropped six straight games and have gone 2-5-2-1 over their last ten games.

Sitting in seventh place in the West, Sioux Falls is only one point out of a playoff spot, but they’ve had trouble finding consistent offense.

The Stampede have a home-and-home series with a Lincoln Stars club that will most certainly be looking to end their own losing streak.

13. Des Moines Buccaneers / Last Ranking: 14

Record: 16-18-5-3

The Buccaneers had quite the week, winning all three games in overtime fashion.

Michael Bevilacqua collected two of the OT winners, including his second against the Stars this season.

Des Moines is 4-4-1-1 over their last ten games and will look to keep it rolling, hosting Omaha and Fargo this weekend.

14. Muskegon Lumberjacks / Last Ranking: 13

Record: 19-21-2-0

Despite ending Green Bay’s three-game winning streak on Saturday, Muskegon is just 4-6-0-0 over its last ten games.

The Lumberjacks' penalty kill has been a sore spot for most of the season. However, they killed off all seven penalties last weekend.

Michael Callow collected two more goals on Saturday, marking his third multi-goal game of the year.

15. Omaha Lancers / Last Ranking: 15

Record: 13-22-4-2

It’s been a challenging year for Omaha, who have the second-fewest points (32) in the USHL.

The Lancers are 3-6-1-0 over their last ten games and have scored the fewest goals (95).

Griffin Jurecki has picked it up offensively, scoring four points (three goals, one assist) in his last five games.

16. Madison Capitols / Last Ranking: 16

Record: 11-29-1-1

The Capitols have parted ways with their top-three point producers, with Jack Musa recently sent to Cedar Rapids.

Madison will look to continue developing the younger players on their roster, as Jack Brandt has done well with expanded playing time, picking up six points (three goals, three assists) in 11 games.
