2022-23 Men's NCAA Hockey Power Rankings

Unbeaten St. Cloud State On The Rise, Minnesota Remains At N...

Chris Peters provides his weekly power rankings for NCAA Division I Men's Hockey.

Welcome to FloHockey's weekly power rankings for men's NCAA hockey. Find out which teams across the country rise, fall or stay put as the weekly series unfold in the 2022-2023 season.

1. Minnesota | Last Ranking: 1

Record: 4-2-0

A hard-fought split with traditional rival North Dakota allows the Gophers to maintain the top spot despite some very serious challengers for No. 1. Minnesota probably feels a little sour to only split with UND after controlling much of Game 2 before lack of discipline and an unmanaged momentum shift changed the course of the game. That said this team is really clicking with balanced scoring throughout the lineup and one of the deepest rosters in the country.

2. Michigan | Last Ranking: 4

Record: 5-1-0

After a road sweep at Lake Superior State, the Wolverines have one more non-conference test against Western Michigan before heading into Big Ten play. Last weekend, true freshman forward Adam Fantilli put up seven points in the series, making a resounding statement that he's a force to be reckoned with. On top of that, the Wolverines continue to get contributions up and down their lineup and strong goaltending from Erik Portillo (BUF) to look like a fairly complete team despite a lot of new faces.

3. St. Cloud State | Last Ranking: 6

Record: 6-0-0

Unbeaten through their first six games, the Huskies had their big show-me series last weekend and swept Minnesota State. SCSU found a way to win against a tough opponent thanks in large part to a massive weekend from grad transfer Grant Cruikshank, who had five points against the Mavericks and pushed his season total to a team-best 10 points. The Huskies have a tricky home-and-home non-conference series against a tough Bemidji State squad, the front end of which you can watch on FloHockey. After that, it's into the teeth of an always grinding NCHC schedule.

4. Denver | Last Ranking: 5

Record: 4-2-0

The Pioneers bounced back from being swept on the road by UMass by sweeping Providence back in Denver. They were tight games, but DU found a way to win against a very hard-driving opponent. Harvard transfer Casey Dornbach continues to play a leading role offensively with eight points for the Pios. They'll start their NCHC schedule next week on the road at Miami.

5. UMass | Last Ranking: 8

Record: 4-0-1

The Minutemen followed up their sweep of Denver by hanging 14 goals on Union over two games last weekend. Sophomore defenseman Scott Morrow (CAR) is looking for a repeat performance of his All-American freshman campaign. He's off to a tremendous start with a team-best four goals and is tied with freshman Kenny Connors (LAK) with seven points. On top of that, UMass continues to get strong goaltending. All three netminders on their roster have made at least one appearance as the Minutemen have posted a team save percentage of .970.

6. Quinnipiac | Last Ranking: 3

Record: 3-1-2

A split at Maine offered another weekend where there were more questions than answers, but Quinnipiac still has only one loss. They haven't really hit their stride yet, but the Bobcats will get a week off before heading into ECAC play. You have to think there has been more than a few lessons learned by a Bobcats squad that should continue to have reasonably high expectations.

7. North Dakota | Last Ranking: 7

Record: 3-2-1

I think we're still learning about this North Dakota team as their last two weekends haven't necessarily been complete performances. That said, they took a win on the road at Minnesota to provide a lot more belief that this team is going to be a handful for other top opponents this season. The Fighting Hawks are about to travel west for a one-off contest against Arizona State in Las Vegas for the 2022 U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame Game.

8. Minnesota State | Last Ranking: 2

Record: 3-3-0

Week to week, I'm not quite sure what to make of the Mavericks, hence their wild fluctuation in these rankings. There's no question they have a team capable of doing big things this year, but a sweep on the road against St. Cloud State after sweeping Minnesota Duluth was a step back. They'll have to be ready for a Bowling Green team that has some scoring ability as the Mavericks open CCHA play on home ice this weekend.

9. UConn | Last Ranking: 10

Record: 5-1-1

A series split with Boston University saw the Huskies finally drop their first game of the season after the best start in program in history. We knew the Huskies could score, but we didn't know how well they'd be able to slow top offenses. Even after giving up five to BU on Saturday, UConn is averaging just 1.9 goals against per game, which is top-four in the NCAA.

10. Ohio State | Last Ranking: 14

Record: 6-1-1

Ohio State swept Bentley over the weekend and managed not to get caught looking ahead. The Buckeyes will meet No. 1 Minnesota this weekend on home ice for their second Big Ten series of the season. Jakub Dobes (MTL) continues to perform admirably in net with a .934 save percentage, while freshman Stephen Halliday (OTT) has played a leading offensive role with nine points through eight games. The Buckeyes have their work cut out for them with No. 1 coming to town, but they've earned some confidence going into the weekend.

11. Boston University | Last Ranking: 11

Record: 3-2-0

A split with a very good UConn squad was not a perfect result, but a boost for this team nonetheless. The Terriers have had a challenging schedule to start the season. Now they've got to go head-to-head with UMass-Lowell which is a team that makes the opposition work for everything they get. This could be among the most telling weekends for this young BU squad in these early stages of the season.

12. Harvard | Last Ranking: 15

Record: 0-0-0

Aside from a 9-0 exhibition win over Canadian University team Guelph, the Crimson are still waiting to play their first official NCAA game. That will change this weekend as they match up at home against ECAC and Ivy League rivals Dartmouth and Princeton. The expectations remain high for Harvard with Sean Farrell (MTL) and Matt Coronato (CGY) likely champing at the bit to get their seasons under way after breaking out in 2021-22.

13. Northeastern | Last Ranking: 9

Record: 3-2-1

Winless in their last three games, the Huskies are coming off of a tight loss to UMass-Lowell. They had to play that game without top goalie Devon Levi (BUF), who was reportedly sidelined with illness. The Huskies have played mostly well enough to win, but the results haven't quite been there. This is another team that I think will continue to grow into the season, especially as its D corps gains more experience.

14. Western Michigan | Last Ranking: 16

Record: 5-2-0

In their toughest test of the season, the Broncos managed a split with a talented Notre Dame squad. Now they'll play a home-and-home series against Michigan and there's certainly some extra motivation in this series. Last season, Michigan backed out of a game against Western Michigan citing safety concerns as the team was without multiple players on international team duty. That didn't sit well with a lot of people in college hockey circles and there's no doubt Western's returning players had this series circled.

15. Penn State | Last Ranking: NR

Record: 6-0-0

The Nittany Lions are undefeated, but have not had the strongest schedule to date. Aside from one overtime win over St. Thomas, they've dominated most of the rest of their games and have been one of the NCAA's highest-scoring teams. RPI transfer Ture Linden has led the team with 10 points through six games, but Penn State boasts six players averaging better than a point-per-game so far this season. They'll travel to Wisconsin this weekend to open Big Ten play.

16. Providence | Last Ranking: 13

Record: 3-2-0

The Friars may have lost both games over the weekend, but they pushed the defending national champions in that series on the road. I think Providence is better than their record and will continue to be a team for others to be aware of. Sophomore Riley Duran (BOS) has been the most consistent source of offense for the Friars with seven points through the team's first five games.

Dropped out: Minnesota Duluth
