FloHockey college hockey reporter Jordan McAlpine delivers power rankings every other week for Division I men's college hockey over the course of the 2024-25 season.
1. Michigan State 25-6-4 (Previous Ranking: 4)
Michigan State shared the Big Ten title with Minnesota and earned the top seed for the Big Ten Tournament, which MSU has advanced to Saturday’s championship game against Ohio State. The Spartans have won three straight against Notre Dame, out-scoring the Irish 11-4. Isaac Howard (TBL) scored the lone goal in last Saturday’s win and Trey Augustine (DET) earned an 18-save shutout. The two were named the Big Ten’s Player and Goalie of the Year earlier this week.
2: Boston College 26-7-2 (PR: 1)
The Eagles hold the No. 1 spot in the Pairwise and are 14-4-1 since the Christmas break. BC fell to Northeastern in the Hockey East Quarterfinals but its season is far from over as the Eagles will compete for their sixth national championship. Ryan Leonard (WSH) was named the Hockey East Player of the Year on Wednesday and continues to lead the NCAA with 29 goals.
3. Western Michigan 28-7-1 (PR: 3)
Western Michigan won its first regular-season title in program history and made quick work of St. Cloud State to open the playoffs, sweeping the Huskies by a combined 12-4. WMU heads to St. Paul as the No. 1 seed for this weekend’s NCHC Frozen Faceoff and is currently third in the Pairwise. WMU’s 4.1 goals per game are an NCAA-best and sophomore Alex Bump (PHI) is coming off a five-point (3-2-5) weekend. Bump leads WMU with 20 goals and 43 points.
4. Minnesota 25-10-4 (PR: 2)
Minnesota will watch the Big Ten Championship Game from home as the Gophers fell to Notre Dame in the quarterfinals. Minnesota dropped Game 1, 3-2, and responded with a 4-2 win, only to fall in the finale. However, Minnesota won three of its previous four games and has a talented lineup that will give anybody fits in the NCAA Tournament. Bob Motzko’s club is currently fourth in the Pairwise.
5. Maine 22-7-6 (PR: 5)
Maine exploded for seven goals last time out in a 7-1 win over UMass-Lowell. Seven different Black Bears found the back of the net and Albin Boija made 27 saves, earning his 21st win of the season. Boija’s 1.75 GAA also ranks fourth among NCAA goaltenders. Maine is third in the Pairwise and is 7-2-3 since the end of January. Only one of those losses came in regulation too.

6. Denver 28-10-1 (PR: 6)
The Pioneers won five of their final six regular-season games and outlasted Colorado College in the NCHC Quarterfinals. Sunday’s Game 3 was a wild one yet DU prevailed, 9-2. Carter King scored twice on Sunday and Zeev Buium (MIN) had a pair of goals in Game 2 as the Pioneers scored 15 goals over the final two games. DU has lit the lamp 64 times over its 14 games since Feb. 1.
7. Boston University 21-12-2 (PR: 7)
Cole Eiserman (NYI) scored 2:59 into overtime last Saturday as BU earned a 3-2 win over UMass in the quarterfinals. The Terriers are 4-0-1 over their past five and 6-2-1 since they defeated BC to win the Beanpot. BU closed out the regular season with 8-2 and 6-1 wins over Providence and Vermont. Eiserman has seven points (5-2-7) over his past three games and Cole Hutson (WSH) has 11 points (4-7-11) over his past seven. Huston was named the Hockey East Defenseman of the Year.
8. UCONN 21-10-4 (PR: 9)
Speaking of Hockey East honors, Mike Cavanaugh was named the league’s Coach of the Year on Wednesday. UConn finished the season fourth in the HE standings and Cavanaugh has the Huskies on the verge of their first NCAA Tournament berth. UConn was picked to finish eighth in the league’s preseason poll. UConn carries a four-game win streak into the semifinals and will look to make it five against BU. Their last regulation loss came on Feb. 7.
9. Ohio State 24-12-2 (PR: 10)
Ohio State dropped three of its final four regular-season games and its playoff opener to Wisconsin. However, the Buckeyes responded with a pair of wins over the Badgers and knocked off red-hot Penn State in the semifinals. Gunnarwolfe Fontaine scored his second goal in overtime and Logan Terness made 31 saves in Game 3, securing the 4-3 win. Now OSU will play for the Big Ten crown against Michigan State.
10. Arizona State 21-13-2 (PR: 12)
Arizona State went 13-6-1 over its final 20 regular-season NCHC games and swept UMD last weekend, rallying from 3-0, 4-3 and 5-4 deficits in Game 2. They were the only team to hand Western Michigan a regulation loss in conference play and ASU finished second in the NCHC standings with 47 points. ASU is currently 15th in the Pairwise and could secure the program’s second NCAA Tournament berth this weekend at the NCHC Frozen Faceoff. ASU plays Denver on Friday – a team they beat three times this season.

11. Minnesota State 26-8-3 (PR: 11)
The Mavericks will battle St. Thomas for the Mason Cup on Saturday and with the Tommies still ineligible, MSU is NCAA Tournament-bound for the 10th time. Luke Strand’s club is unbeaten over its last 10 (9-0-1) and is coming off a 4-0 win over Bemidji State in the semifinals. MSU has held its opponent to one goal or less in 22 of its 37 games this season and Alex Tracy has made 209 of 216 possible saves over his past eight games. Tracy’s .946 save percentage is the nation’s best and MSU’s 54 goals allowed are the nation’s fewest.
12. Providence 21-10-5 (PR: 8)
The Friars fell to UConn to open the playoffs but with Providence sitting eighth in the Pairwise, Nate Leaman’s club isn’t done yet. Providence endured a rough January but went 5-2-0 to close out the regular season and finished fifth in Hockey East. Sophomore Hudson Malinoski scored in two of his final three games and is tied for the team lead with 11 goals.
13. Penn State 20-13-4 (PR: 15)
Penn State swept Michigan in the quarterfinals but fell to Ohio State in overtime, cutting PSU’s Big Ten title hopes short. However, Penn State remains 13th in the Pairwise and now shifts its focus to scoreboard watching. Freshman JJ Wiebusch scored five goals over his three playoff games, including an incredible between-the-legs goal in overtime in Game 1 against Michigan.

14. Quinnipiac 24-10-2 (PR: 14)
Quinnipiac earned 4-1 and 4-0 wins over Brown in the ECAC Quarterfinals and will play Cornell in the semifinals. Quinnipiac has out-scored its opponents 23-6 over its past six games and four of those six goals came in one game (Feb. 28). Sophomore Matej Marinov got the nod in both playoff games and has made 95 saves on 97 shots over his past four starts. Marinov and Silverstein both have 12 wins.
15. UMass 20-13-5 (PR: 16)
UMass suffered a heart-breaking OT loss to BU in the Hockey East Quarterfinals. Michael Hrabal (UTH) made 26 saves, including 23 over the second and third periods, but UMass fell 3-2 in the extra session. While it's a disappointing loss for the Minutemen, they’ve still gone 10-3-3 since the middle of January and find themselves at No. 11 in the Pairwise. That should be good enough for the program’s sixth NCAA Tournament appearance – which would be its fifth since 2019.
16. Michigan 18-15-3 (PR: 13)
The Wolverines’ NCAA Tournament hopes are out of their hands. Michigan is currently 14th in the Pairwise but with auto-bids and teams such as Arizona State still playing around them, that can quickly change. Michigan was swept by Penn State in the Big Ten quarterfinals after a pair of four-point weekends against Minnesota and Ohio State to finish the regular season. TJ Hughes lost his point streak after 15 games down the stretch but leads the way with 15 goals and 38 points.
