FloHockey's every-other-week power rankings for the 2024-25 men's college hockey season.
FloHockey college hockey reporter Jordan McAlpine delivers power rankings every other week for Division I men's college hockey over the course of the 2024-25 season.
1. Michigan State 20-4-3 (Previous Ranking: 1)
Michigan State earned five of possible six points against Minnesota, including a 9-3 drubbing to open the series before dropping a Thursday-night contest with Ohio State. MSU holds a five-point lead atop the Big Ten standings and is the nation’s first team to 20 wins. The Spartans have still lost just four times this season. Captain Red Savage (DET) is out for the season but Charlie Stramel (MIN) has stepped up and Isaac Howard (TBL) continues his tremendous junior season.
2. Boston College 18-4-1 (PR: 3)
Boston College has won six straight and swept Providence and BU in back-to-back weeks, lifting the Eagles to the top of the Hockey East standings. BC is 8-1-1 over its past 10 and continues to be one of the nation’s most explosive teams, while also holding opponents to a goal or less in five of their past six wins. Ryan Leonard (WSH) had four goals in the sweep of BU, including a Game 1 hat trick, while Teddy Stiga (NSH) had a two-goal weekend.
3. Western Michigan 17-4-1 (PR: 4)
Pat Ferschweiler’s club sits atop the NCHC standings with 30 points and Western Michigan has played two fewer games than second-place Omaha and third-place Arizona State. The Broncos swept Miami last weekend, out-scoring the Red Hawks 10-3 in the series, and won a pair of games at North Dakota the week prior. WMU has won six straight, eight of its past 10 and is one of just five NCAA teams allowing less than two goals per game. WMU’s .934 save percentage is tied for third in the country thanks to its Cameron Rowe-Hampton Slukynsky tandem.

4. Minnesota 19-6-3 (PR: 2)
The Gophers are just 2-3-1 over their past six and left East Lansing with just one point last weekend. The nine goals allowed were a season-high and despite scoring 21 times over their past six conference games, Minnesota has just seven points to show for it. However, the Gophers remain second in the Big Ten standings and Jimmy Snuggerud (STL) has seven goals over his past games. Minnesota has a big weekend on tap as Wisconsin comes to town.
5. Denver 18-6-0 (PR: 7)
The Pioneers split their series at Maine to open the new year and followed it up with three wins over their past four. DU nearly came back in the one loss at Minnesota Duluth too. The Pioneers are currently tied for fourth in the NCHC standings and have red-hot Omaha coming to town this weekend, and they’ve continued to light the lamp. DU has 15 goals over the past four games, three of which from Jack Devine (FLA).
6. Maine 15-5-3 (PR: 6)
Maine had its first win-less weekend since early November, as the Black Bears suffered a 4-2 loss and 2-2 tie against UConn – although Maine nabbed the extra point in a shootout win. Maine swept UMass Lowell the week prior and remains one of the nation’s top defensive teams. However, the offense needs to follow, as they’ve scored two goals or less in six of their last seven. Maine is currently third in the Hockey East standings with 26 points – two behind BU and six behind BC. The Black Bears have two games in hand on both too.
7. Providence 15-6-3 (PR: 5)
The Friars are in the midst of a murder’s row with 11 consecutive games against ranked opponents – Boston College (2), UMass Lowell (3), UConn (2), Maine (2) and Boston University (2). However, they’re off to an 0-3-1 start, as Providence was swept by Boston College and earned just one point against UML. The Friars have scored just four goals over their past four games, three of which came in one game, and have a home-and-home with UConn looming.
8. UConn 14-8-2 (PR: 15)
The Huskies have arguably been the nation’s biggest story since the calendar flip, as UConn is 6-0-1 in 2025. They defeated Quinnipiac and Sacred Heart last weekend to win the Connecticut Ice championship and the Huskies are quietly fourth in the Pairwise. The Huskies have received solid goaltending from Tyler Muszelik (FLA), holding their opponents to two goals or less in six straight games and 2.4 goals per game on the season. UConn has a big test coming up at Providence.

9. UMass Lowell 13-7-3 (PR: 9)
The River Hawks are 1-3-1 over their past five. UML was swept by Maine and suffered an overtime loss against Stonehill before rebounding with a five-point weekend against Providence. The Stonehill loss is the real head-scratcher of the group, but give Norm Bazin’s club credit for responding against a good Providence squad. Pierson Brandon scored one of Friday’s three goals and delivered the game-winner on Saturday, while Beni Halasz put together a 24-save shutout to put UML back in the win column.
10. Boston University 13-9-1 (PR: 12)
BU’s season has been far from perfect, but Jay Pandolfo’s club seems to have taken a step and had a four-game win streak until last weekend. BU is still 8-4-0 over its last 12 and put up a fight Saturday against BU, ultimately falling 2-0. Mikhail Yegorov (NJD) made 23 of a possible 24 saves in his NCAA debut after being assessed a penalty going out too early during his first warmups, and BC scored on the ensuing power play. BU hosts New Hampshire on Friday before facing Harvard in the Beanpot.
11. Arizona State 14-9-1 (PR: 13)
Arizona State allowed five third-period goals to Colorado College last Saturday and suffered a 5-4 loss. It was ASU’s first regulation loss since Nov. 15, as the Sun Devils are 11-2-0 since – the other loss against North Dakota in overtime. Despite the loss to CC, ASU is firmly in the Penrose race and Greg Powers’ club continues to see production from its transfer additions. Artem Shlaine (NJD) is the NCHC’s leading scorer with 19 points in conference play while Ryan Kirwan leads the league and is tied for fifth nationally with 16 goals through 24 games.

12. Minnesota State 17-7-2 (PR: 8)
Although Augustana and Michigan Tech have made it interesting, Minnesota State still appears to be the CCHA favorite, and MSU is 12-4-2 in conference play. However, they’ve split back-to-back series against Michigan Tech and at Ferris State, and the games featured opposite extremes. MSU was shutout in both of its losses 1-0 and 2-0 – but lit the lamp 12 times over the two wins, including a 7-2 margin last Saturday at Ferris State. Kaden Bohlsen and Adam Eisele both had two-goal efforts and Eisele added a pair of assists. Alex Tracy has allowed two goals or less in 14 of his past 15 games and owns a .941 save percentage on the season.
13. Ohio State 16-7-2 (PR: 10)
After earning just a point the weekend prior at Penn State, the Buckeyes earned a huge victory over No. 1 Michigan State. They're now 2-3-1 over their past six games, yet remain third in the Big Ten standings with two games in hand. OSU is averaging 3.3 goals per game and has especially been good on home ice this season too, as the Buckeyes are 10-1-1 at Value City Arena. They’ll have three of their next five at home against Michigan State and Wisconsin.
14. Michigan 14-10-2 (PR: 11)
Michigan also earned points last weekend at Wisconsin (0-1-1) but the Wolverines are in the midst of a 4-7-1 conference stretch. Michigan dropped the series opener, 4-5, and skated to a 4-4 win, and despite the lack of wins, Brandon Naurato’s club has scored four or more goals in four of their past six. TJ Hughes scored in both games against the Badgers and Michigan’s 81 goals rank 11th in the country. Michigan hosts Penn State – a team the Wolverines swept and scored 16 goals against in late November.
15. Quinnipiac 15-8-2 (PR: NR)
Quinnipiac is 9-2-1 over its past 12 games, including its recent 5-1-1 stretch. The lone regulation loss came to UConn too, 2-1, and the Bobcats led the shot count 36-24. Quinnipiac ranks just outside the top 10 in goals scored (3.3) and goals against (2.3) per game, and the Bobcats have especially been good on special teams. Quinnipiac’s power play (28.4%) ranks third in the country and its penalty kill (87.8%) ranks fifth. Travis Treloar has scored in three of his past four games and has a team-leading 12 goals.

16. North Dakota 12-10-1 (PR: 14)
North Dakota is coming off its bye week after being swept by Western Michigan, and there’s a massive series looming at St. Cloud State. UND is tied for fourth in the NCHC with 20 points and should be playing desperate hockey down the stretch. UND put together a 5-1-0 NCHC stretch before being swept by the Broncos, and UND allowed five goals in the finale – which tied a season-high. UND has 12 regular-season games left and is currently 26th in the Pairwise.
