College Hockey Power Rankings: Minnesota On Top While Provid...

FloHockey's every-other-week power rankings for the 2024-25 men's college hockey season.

FloHockey college hockey reporter Jordan McAlpine delivers power rankings every other week for Division I men's college hockey over the course of the 2024-25 season.

1. Minnesota 15-2-1 (Previous Ranking: 2)

The Gophers are coming off an impressive sweep of Michigan, out-scoring the Wolverines 8-0 and controlling much of the series. Minnesota is unbeaten (5-0-1) over its last six, the one outlier being a Nov. 29 tie against Alaska. The Gophers held Michigan, which had scored 51 times through its first 14 games, off the board and Minnesota’s 4.1 goals per game are now tied with Denver for the NCAA lead. Sophomore goaltender Nathan Airey is also unbeaten this season at 9-0-1.

2. Michigan State 12-2-0 (PR: 1)

Michigan State is 3-1-0 over its last four but they’ve had to earn it. The Spartans swept Lindenwood to close out November, 4-0 and 2-0 in the finale. However, MSU struggled a bit this past weekend at Wisconsin, which entered the series 5-8-1. MSU fell 4-0 in the opener but clawed back for a 3-2 overtime win on Saturday. Isaac Howard (TBL) delivered the overtime winner and has nine points (3-6-9) over his last seven games.

3. Boston College 11-3-1 (PR: 4)

The Eagles are back on track and unbeaten over their last four, which includes a 3-0-0 mark on home ice. BC also skated to a 3-3 tie at UMass Lowell last weekend. Ryan Leonard (WSH) remains red-hot and leads the NCAA with 12 goals, while Gabe Perreault (NYR) ranks second in the nation with 23 points. Leonard is also tied for the NCAA lead with five game-winning goals. BC is idle until Jan. 10.

4. Maine 12-2-2 (PR: 5)

Ben Barr’s club continues to roll as the Black Bears have won five straight and are 5-2-2 in conference play. Maine’s last four wins have come out of Hockey East, however, as the Black Bears earned a pair of wins at RPI and swept Stonehill last time out. Maine has out-scored its opponents 24-7 during its five-game win streak and 64-26 on the season.

5. Denver 13-3-0 (PR: 3)

Denver dropped its opener at Western Michigan last Friday, which extended its losing streak to three games. The Pioneers were previously swept at home by Arizona State and it marked DU’s first three-game skid since the 2021-22 season. However, they got back in the win column on Saturday with an overtime win in Kalamazoo, 3-2. Zeev Buium (MIN) scored DU’s first goal and assisted Carter King’s OT tally.

6. Western Michigan 10-3-1 (PR: 7)

The Broncos ended the first half with that above-mentioned OT loss. However, it’s been an impressive half of hockey and Western Michigan currently sits atop the NCHC standings with 19 points. Pat Ferschweiler’s club is 6-1-1 in conference action, including a 4-0-0 mark on the road, and has home wins over Colorado College and Denver. They’re also allowing just 1.8 goals per game, which is tied for the nation’s fourth-best mark.

7. Providence 12-3-2 (PR: 12)

The Friars make quite the jump this week thanks to their five-game win streak. Providence earned a pair of wins in Lake Placid over Clarkson and St. Lawrence, and followed it up with a sweep of eighth-ranked Colorado College on home ice. The Friars won 4-3 on Friday and exploded for five goals on Saturday to secure the sweep. Taige Harding (CHI) had four helpers in Game 2 while freshman John Mustard (CHI) had a goal and two assists.

8. Michigan 10-5-1 (PR: 6)

The Wolverines had been shutout just once through their first 14 games – a 4-0 loss to St. Cloud State in mid-October. However, another Minnesota school yielded shutouts No. 2 and 3, as Michigan was swept by the Gophers. After out-scoring BU, Notre Dame and Penn State by a combined 32-19, the Wolverines have been out-scored 13-3 over their last four games – a home-and-home with Western Michigan and this weekend in Minneapolis.

9. Colorado College 9-4-1 (PR: 8)

The Tigers were swept for the first time this season and allowed a season-high four goals on Friday at Providence, followed up by five goals on Saturday. Kaidan Mbereko had allowed four or more goals just 11 times through the first 79 games of his stellar collegiate career, but the Friars did so on back-to-back nights. The junior will look to get back on track this weekend as CC faces Denver in its first of two home-and-home series this season.

10. St. Cloud State 10-5-0 (PR: 9)

The Huskies have played just four games over the past four weeks and split both series, with both losses coming in overtime. SCSU fell to Omaha this past Friday, 4-3, after carrying a 3-2 lead into the third period. The Huskies responded with a 5-2 win on Saturday, which included a four-goal second period. However, the biggest concern is Isak Posch’s lower-body injury, as Brett Larson expects his sophomore netminder to miss an extended period of time.

11. Minnesota State 12-4-2 (PR: 13)

Minnesota State swept Bowling Green last time out and Michigan Tech two weeks prior, and the Mavericks are now unbeaten over their last nine (7-0-2). Junior Adam Eisele had another two points in Game 1, as MSU skated to a 4-1 win over the Falcons, and Rhett Pitlick had three points (2-1-3) on Saturday as the Mavs earned a 3-2 OT win. Pitlick leads the way in goals (7) and points (16) through 18 games.

12. UMass Lowell 10-4-2 (PR: NR)

UMass Lowell is a new entrant to this week’s rankings as the River Hawks quietly have 10 wins. UML suffered a 3-2 loss at Boston College last time out but went toe-to-toe with one of the nation’s most-explosive teams, and they’ve been in every game this season. The River Hawks are 2-2-1 over their last five but they enter the Christmas break tied for second in the Hockey East standings. Freshman forward Mirko Buttazzoni has four goals and an assist over his last three games.

13. Cornell 5-3-3 (PR: 10)

Cornell has cooled off after its hot start and split a home-and-home with Colgate last weekend, winning 3-2 in overtime and falling 6-3. The Big Red allowed a trio of third-period goals in the finale and are 2-3-2 since mid-November. Sophomore Ryan Walsh (BOS) is the lone Cornell skater with a double-digit point total at the break as he has five goals and five helpers.

14. Boston University 8-6-1 (PR: 15)

BU’s first half has been a roller coaster ride, but the Terriers have won two of their last three. Perhaps the trip to Belfast will benefit Jay Pandolfo’s club in the long run, as BU defeated Merrimack and Notre Dame on the Emerald Isle and scored 10 times. They returned home and were shut out by UMass on Saturday, 4-0, but will travel to UMass and face the NTDP in an exhibition contest to close out the first half.

15. North Dakota 9-7-1 (PR: 10)

Brad Berry called Friday’s comeback a ‘defining’ win, as North Dakota rallied from a 4-2 deficit and scored a trio of third-period goals en route to a 5-4 win at Miami. UND polished off the sweep with a 4-2 win on Saturday but the weekend was anything but stress-free. The Fighting Hawks went 0-1-1 the previous weekend in a home-and-home with Bemidji State and also barely snuck by Robert Morris the week before. Sacha Boisvert (CHI) continues to shine and was named the NCHC’s November Rookie of the Month.

16. Ohio State 11-4-1 (PR: 14)

The Buckeyes were swept at Princeton to finish November but bounced back with a pair of wins against Penn State, 4-0 and 4-2. Kristoffer Eberly earned his second shutout of the season with 22 saves while Gunnarwolfe Fontaine scored twice in Game 1, as the Buckeyes played their first home game in over a month. OSU is just three wins shy of tying last season’s total and will close out the first half against Notre Dame.
