2024-25 Men's College Hockey Power Rankings

Denver Still Perfect, Minnesota Surging

FloHockey's every-other-week power rankings for the 2024-25 men's college hockey season.

Chris Peters delivers power rankings every other week for Division I men's college hockey over the course of the 2024-25 season.

1. Denver 6-0-0 (Previous Ranking: 1)

The defending champs are perfect through six games and had a convincing home sweep against Wisconsin most recently. Up next, DU will play Yale on the road and Lindenwood at home the following week before jumping into their NCHC schedule. Goalie Matt Davis has followed up his Frozen Four Most Outstanding Player performance with a .930 save percentage through his first six starts this season.

2. Boston College 3-1-0 (PR: 2)

The Eagles have played a lighter schedule through October, but things really pick up this week as BC travels to St. Cloud State for a tough road series with the Huskies before getting their Hockey East schedule going against Maine the following week. BC passed a tough test in a tight game against Western Michigan last week, winning 4-2. Gabe Perreault (NYR) is leading the scoring with seven points so far this season.

3. Michigan State 5-1-0 (PR: 3)

The Spartans picked up a sweep in Buffalo last weekend, but it wasn't exactly a walk in the park against Canisius in a pair of games seen on FloHockey. Trey Augustine (DET) picked up a shutout in the first game and improved to 4-1-0 with a .939 save percentage so far this season. Meanwhile, sophomore Luca Di Pasquo got a start and proved capable in a win. The Spartans have the weekend off before jumping into Big Ten play on Nov. 8 against Ohio State.

4. Boston University 4-1-0 (PR: 7)

BU got a tough road split at North Dakota, getting blown out the first game before responding with a 4-3 win to close out the series last weekend. Now they've got another tough non-conference matchup as Michigan rolls into town. The good news for BU is that their scoring is spread out quite well, with many of their points coming from freshmen and sophomores to start.

5. Minnesota 5-1-0 (PR: 7)

The Gophers sure can score. They put up 13 goals against St. Thomas last weekend after 12 in their previous series against Minnesota Duluth. Connor Kurth (TBL) and Matthew Wood (NSH) are leading the offense with 12 points each in just six games played. Defenseman Sam Rinzel (CHI) has been a revalation this year with eight points including a career-best four goals. We'll still have to see if the Gophers' goaltending will hold up against stronger competition, but we can clearly see the offensive capability.

6. Maine 4-0-1 (PR: 10)

Maine is racking up the wins despite some of the significant losses from their roster from last season because of how stingy they've been in terms of goals allowed. Sophomore Albin Boija continues to excel with a .926 save percentage and just nine goals allowed through five games. Senior Harrison Scott has been an offensive leader with eight points through the first five games. The Black Bears host Merrimack for two games this weekend before a highly-anticipated matchup with Boston College on the road the following weekend.

7. North Dakota 3-2-0 (PR: 5)

UND is having a hard time stringing series wins together in the early goings and some of the inconsistency could catch up to them later. That said, picking up a split against BU on home ice last week was a good sign. The Fighting Hawks have a tough road series as they meet Cornell Friday and Saturday as the Big Red open their season.

8. Cornell 0-0-0 (PR: 6)

Aside from an exhibition game against the University of Toronto last weekend, we won't know much about the Big Red until they hit the ice Friday as they welcome North Dakota to Ithaca. There is a lot of reason to be excited about this team and to have belief in them. Ian Shane could be the goalie to really make everything go for Cornell this season.

9. Colorado College 4-0-0 (PR: 9)

Unbeaten through their first four games so far, CC has been stingy when it comes to allowing goals with just five given up so far. Junior netminder Kaiden Mbereko has a .936 save percentage through his first four starts. The Tigers are going to be tested this weekend in a Colorado Springs rivalry matchup against Air Force, which has been able to salvage splits against high-profile foes before. That series will be a home-and-home with Saturday night's contest right here on FloHockey.

10. St. Cloud State 6-1-0 (PR: 16)

It's a hot start in St. Cloud with the Huskies' lone loss coming on the road against Michigan. They've won six of their first seven and will face their biggest test of the season this weekend as they play host to No. 2 Boston College. Sophomore Barrett Hall (SEA) and freshman Austin Burnevik (ANA) have been the drivers offensively with both tied for the team lead with seven points. More importantly, sophomore goalie Isak Posch has been among the nation's best goaltenders with a .946 save percentage while appearing in all seven games.

11. Western Michigan 3-1-0 (PR: 13)

I am a big believer in Western Michigan and after seeing how they hung in with Boston College on the road in a one-off game over the weekend made me believe even more. Hampton Slukysnky (LAK) was excellent in the 4-2 loss, stopping 32 of 35 shots faced. WMU had a 2-1 lead in that game, but BC was just too much in the third period, especially with two late goals from Ryan Leonard (WSH). Even so, that was a performance that shows the Broncos can contend with the bigs in the NCAA. Meanwhile, freshman Zach Nehring (WPG) was just named NCHC Rookie Of The Month.

12. Providence 3-1-1 (PR: 12)

The Friars have had to play a chunk of the early season without highly-touted freshman Trevor Connelly (VGK), but that hasn't kept them from winning games. The Friars are unbeaten in each of their last four game since a season-opening road loss to North Dakota. They'll have a challenging home-and-home with UNH this weekend before a home-and-home with Northeastern after that.

13. Michigan 3-2-1 (PR: 11)

Michigan has played a fairly challenging schedule out the gates and as a result has found it hard to win both games in a series. They've had losses to Minnesota State and St. Cloud State and tied Arizona State. Next weekend, they go on the road to Boston University before opening Big Ten play the following weekend. The Wolverines have been led by Montreal Canadiens first-rounder Michael Hage, who has seven points through his first six NCAA games.

14. Ohio State 5-0-1 (PR: NR)

Unbeaten through six games, the Buckeyes won't be ignored any longer. A road sweep at Wisconsin really highlights the schedule thus far, but OSU also swept Bowling Green in a home and home last week. The really tough part of their schedule doesn't hit in earnest until December, or really even January, but they've got a big-time matchup in early November on the road against Michigan State to really test their mettle.

15. Minnesota State 5-3-0 (PR: NR)

The Mavericks have played one of the toughest schedules to start the season with splits secured at Michigan, against Merrimack and North Dakota before sweeping Omaha last weekend. I wasn't quite sure what to expect of the Mavericks this season, but they've started off with a strong opening statement with a number of wins that will help them when it comes time for at-large bids. They hit the CCHA portion of their schedule hard, starting on the road against Bemidji State.

16. UMass-Lowell 4-1-0 (PR: NR)

A road split with Minnesota Duluth followed by a sweep against Colgate and a 6-3 win against Merrimack to open Hockey East play is a solid start for Lowell. They'll be taking on Holy Cross on Nov. 1 right here on FloHockey, before a big home-and-home series against BU. The RiverHawks have gotten a lot of production from four-year player Owen Cole, who leads the team with seven points.

Dropped Out:  Wisconsin, Quinnipiac, Nebraska Omaha
