2024-25 Men's College Hockey Power Rankings

Boston College, Michigan State Prove Power In Split, Denver ...

FloHockey's every-other-week power rankings for the 2024-25 men's college hockey season.

Chris Peters delivers power rankings every other week for men's college hockey over the course of the 2024-25 season.

1. Denver, 2-0-0 (Previous Ranking: 1)

The Pios started the season right with a dominant performance in head coach David Carle's hometown of Anchorage, Alaska. In that series, senior forward Jack Devine (FLA) had six assists, while sophomore sensation Zeev Buium (MIN) posted four of his own. DU will have bigger tests ahead, but early indications are they should have the offense to overwhelm the opposition at times.

2. Boston College, 1-1-0 (PR: 2)

A season-opening split with Michigan State on the road is maybe not a perfect result, but a strong one against a good team especially with a Jacob Fowler (MTL) shutout in the opener. The big thing that we saw is that Boston College seems to have adequately replaced their offensive firepower. Gabe Perreault (NYR) and Ryan Leonard (WSH) each had a goal and assist over the weekend, top freshman James Hagens (2025) had two assists and junior Oskar Jellvik (BOS) led the way with three points.

3. Michigan State, 3-1-0 (PR: 3)

The Spartans bounced back from a series-opening loss to BC to get the split with a 4-3 win in the back half. One of the more notable early-season performances in college hockey has come from Isaac Howard (TBL) who looks poised to lead the MSU offense this season. Having a go-to scorer like the one Howard appears to be growing into can go a long way for a team with national title aspirations.

4. Boston University, 2-0-0 (PR: 7)

BU's offense looked like it hadn't missed a beat from a season ago. Freshmen contributors provided offense, while veterans like Shane Lachance (EDM), Quinn Hutson and Ryan Greene (CHI) were driving play for the Terriers. Rookies Alex Zetterberg and Cole Eiserman (NYI) have each already scored their first two NCAA goals.

5. North Dakota, 1-0-0 (PR: 5)

Luckily for UND, their exhibition against Augustana didn't count, because that was an eye-opening loss. The Fighting Hawks rebounded rather nicely, however, against a quick Providence squad. Sacha Boisvert (CHI) looks like he's going to be a real difference-maker as a freshman after his two-point effort against Providence.

6. Cornell, 0-0-0 (PR: 6)

The Big Red get to chill for a bit and likely won't move very far from this lofty spot in the rankings until they finally drop the puck. They will scrimmage with Princeton next week as former assistant coach Ben Syer brings his new club to Ithaca, then there will be another exhibition against the University of Toronto before they host No.5 North Dakota for their first live games of the year the first week of November.

7. Minnesota, 1-1-0 (PR: 4)

Minnesota got off to an uneven start at the Ice Breaker last weekend. The Golden Gophers rolled over Air Force, but stumbled in the final against Nebraska-Omaha, which enters our power rankings this week. Connor Kurth (TBL) was a standout in the tournament, posting four points over the weekend, while transfer Matthew Wood (NSH) picked up three assists for his first points as a Gopher.

8. Quinnipiac, 1-0-0 (PR: 11)

The Bobcats had a battle against Penn State on their home rink last weekend and pulled out the 3-2 win. It was another example of how QU's team game can be so constricting to their opposition. The Nittany Lions had just 12 shots through the first two periods as Quinnipiac built up a 3-0 lead over the first two frames. Meanwhile, BU transfer Jeremy Wilmer provided an offensive spark with two goals in the win.

9. Colorado College, 2-0-0 (PR: 15)

A 10-goal weekend against Northern Michigan got them started off right, but the real reason CC jumped up so much this week is that they've got a pair of juniors that I think will make a lot of noise in the NCHC this year. Noah Laba (NYR) had six points over opening weekend, while Gleb Veremyev, one of the top UFAs in college hockey this season, had two goals and two assists.

10. Maine, 1-0-0 (PR: 12)

Maine has one live game and one exhibition game under their belt. Through those contests, they've allowed zero goals against. Sophomore goalie Albin Boija is going to be a factor for them, but the schedule only gets tougher from here. The Black Bears meet Quinnipiac and Northeastern over each of the next two weekends.

11. Michigan, 2-1-1 (PR: 10)

Consistency is going to be hard to come by for the Wolverines this season, but there are positive signs. They have played in two real series this season so far and earned two wins over that span. I think there's going to be a few weeks of finding their way. One player who seems to have already found his game, however, is Michael Hage (MTL), who has points in every game and leads the Wolverines with six points over his first four NCAA contests.

12. Providence, 0-1-0 (PR: 9)

You have to respect the Friars for challenging themselves early by booking a single road game at North Dakota. They lost 5-2, but will return home to Schneider Arena for a non-conference meeting with a tricky Arizona State squad. We're going to get a real glimpse of what this Providence recruiting class can do quickly. If the freshmen add the dose of skill I expect them to, Providence is going to be a tough team to slow down.

13. Western Michigan, 2-0-0 (PR: 14)

A home and home with Ferris State went very well for WMU, as expected. They out-scored the Bulldogs 9-2 over the two games they played. They gave both goalies Cameron Rowe and Hampton Slukynsky (LAK) a game and both performed well with Slukynsky making 28 saves and Rowe making 17 in their starts. Slukynsky's older brother Grant, a transfer from Northern Michigan, also made an early impact with three points in the weekend series.

14. Nebraska Omaha, 2-0-0 (PR: NR)

How 'bout them Mavericks? Starting the season in Vegas with an Ice Breaker championship thanks to a 2-1 OT win over Minnesota is quite a way to open your season account. UNO also beat out UMass in OT the opening game. What is plainly obvious after the weekend is the value goalie Simon Latkoczy brings between the pipes. He stopped 77 of 80 shots over the weekend for a .963 save percentage. If you have a goalie, you have a chance.

15. Wisconsin, 1-1-0 (PR: 8)

In the most stunning result of the young season, Lindenwood waltzed into Madison and picked up an opening-night win over the Badgers. Then UW needed overtime the next night to secure the split. It's too early to be concerned about potential offensive woes for the Badgers, but that was not an inspiring intro to the season. Quinn Finley (NYI) will be an integral offensive piece to the puzzle there and showed it over the weekend with three points in the series.

16. St. Cloud State, 3-0-0 (PR: NR)

The Huskies are building some momentum going into the season with a trio of wins over CCHA opponents. They beat St. Thomas in their season-opener, 1-0, then swept Bemidji State in a home-and-home. One early bright spot has been freshman Austin Burnevik (ANA), who has five points so far. We're going to learn an awful lot about SCSU this weekend when they travel to Ann Arbor for a date with the Michigan Wolverines.

Dropped Out:  Minnesota Duluth, UMass
