Each week veteran hockey analyst Chris Peters delivers his men's college hockey power rankings. Check back every week to see who's rising, who's falling and where your favorite team might land.
1. North Dakota (12-3-1) | Last Week: 2
The Fighting Hawks narrowly edge out the Eagles this week to take over the top spot on our power rankings for the first time this season despite a weekend split with Denver. They put seven goals up on the Pioneers in the first game and dropped a 3-2 OT decision in the second game, but they continue to prove they can hang with and beat their fellow top-tier teams. This team seems to keep improving as the season progresses, too, with some legitimate scoring depth.
2. Boston College (12-3-1) | Last Week: 1
A split with Northeastern included a wild 5-3 loss in the Friday game before BC bounced back for a 3-1 win on the road the following night. Either way, it was enough to knock the Eagles off of the top spot after the last few weeks. BC has one game this weekend against Providence before going on an extended holiday break, not returning to regular-season action until Jan. 12.
3. Denver (11-4-1) | Last Week: 3
A split with North Dakota on home ice was not a perfect result, but one that showed this team is on the level with top teams across the nation. Massimo Rizzo (PHI) is looking likely to be the first person to crack 30 points in the NCAA this year as he sits at 28 over 16 games. Meanwhile, Jack Devine (FLA) continues scoring at will with 14 goals in 16 games.
4. Boston University (11-4-1) | Last Week: 4
A home-and-home sweep of Merrimack was another impressive result as the Terriers have now won seven of their last eight games. They're on a break until Dec. 29 when they'll play Yale, but will likely be without Lane Hutson (MTL), Macklin Celebrini (2024) and Tom Willander (VAN), who will all be busy at the World Junior Championship.
5. Quinnipiac (11-4-1) | Last Week: 5
Quinnipiac continues to make it look easy in the ECAC as they beat RPI and Union by a combined score of 10-1. They've got a quick non-conference game this weekend against Long Island before hitting the break. This team just does not look like it can be slowed down offensively at this point while maintaining the identity of strong team defense.
6. Michigan State (10-4-2) | Last Week: 6
The Spartans were idle last weekend, but will have a big series against Notre Dame before a brief holiday break. Michigan State will also play in the Great Lakes Invitational with Ferris State, Michigan Tech and Alaska to close out December. You'll be able to follow all of the action from the GLI on FloHockey.
7. Wisconsin (12-4-0) | Last Week: 9
The Badgers needed to get themselves back on track and did just that in a weekend sweep of Ohio State, outscoring the Buckeyes 9-1 over two games. A date with a very pesky Penn State squad awaits the Badgers this weekend before they play in their home tournament after Christmas.
8. Maine (9-3-1) | Last Week: 10
Maine took out UNH, then UConn, then Union in three games played over six days. It was another impressive stretch for a team that got right back on track after being swept by Boston University two weeks prior. The Nadeau brothers share the team scoring lead with 20 points each and have really paced the Black Bears.
9. Arizona State (11-3-2) | Last Week: 12
The Sun Devils had an unbeaten weekend in a tough place to play as they walked into Colorado Springs and grabbed a win and a tie from Colorado College. ASU hosts Dartmouth this weekend before heading out to Pittsburgh to take on Robert Morris, which you'll be able to see on FloHockey Dec. 16 and 17.
10. Providence (9-4-2) | Last Week: 11
The Friars were idle last weekend, but will be back at it Saturday on the road at Boston College. That will be a big game with a lot of eyes on it around the NCAA. PC won't have another game until Dec. 30 as their schedule lightens up before a very challenging stretch run against Hockey East opponents through January and February.
11. Minnesota (8-5-3) | Last Week: 7
The Gophers took a split against Penn State, earning a 4-1 win last Friday and a 6-3 loss on Saturday. Now they've got to go back on the road to play Ohio State to try to gain some confidence. The Gophers have been a tough team to figure out of late.
12. UMass (9-4-1) | Last Week: 8
The Minutemen lost their only game of the weekend to Vermont last weekend. They'll host Alaska Anchorage for a pair of non-conference games this weekend before hitting the break. Inconsistency offensively is something UMass will look to correct as they head into the second half. That didn't seem to be a problem earlier in the season, but has been more of late.
13. Western Michigan (10-3-1) | Last Week: 13
A fairly easy sweep of Lindenwood was yet another example of how stingy this team has been of late. They've allowed no more than one goal in any of their last six games, all wins. Goaltender Cameron Rowe's career year continues to be a big storyline for the Broncos. He has played in every game and owns a .925 save percentage with a 1.86 goals-against average.
14. New Hampshire (7-3-1) | Last Week: 14
The Wildcats played just one game last week, a loss to Maine. They'll play just one game this weekend as well before a brief break for the holidays. There just really haven't been many teams out there that has significantly pushed from outside of the top 16 this last week to unseat any of the teams that were here last week.
15. Michigan (7-6-3) | Last Week: 15
Michigan picked up a split with Notre Dame last weekend as they continue struggling to string wins together. Still, the talent on this team is such that you have to think they'll hang around and be a threat, but they just haven't put it together yet.
16. RIT (10-4-0) | Last Week: 16
The Tigers keep pushing and picked up a pair of wins against Robert Morris last week, but they'll have their work cut out for them this weekend. RIT is on the road against AIC, which has been on a roll of late. Should the Tigers take that series, however, they'll seriously start pushing to get into the at-large berth conversation thanks to some key non-conference wins earlier in the year.
