Chris Peters delivers weekly power rankings for the 2023-24 men's college hockey season.

Each week veteran hockey analyst Chris Peters delivers his men's college hockey power rankings. Check back every week to see who's rising, who's falling and where your favorite team might land.

1. Denver (4-1-1) | Last Week: 1

The Pioneers tied with first-year program Augustana, but the Vikings have been playing everyone tough. It wasn't a good result, but Denver bounced back and got a 4-0 win over Air Force. In a year where it's been increasingly difficult to pick out which of the teams at the top of the list is the true No. 1, I still really like how DU looks on paper compared to some of their peers in terms of depth and scoring ability.

2. Boston College (5-1-0) | Last Week: 3

A lot of people were looking at BC's neighbors down at the other end of Commenwealth Avenue to take the big step this year, but here are the Eagles coming off of a sweep of a good Michigan State team and this group just can't stop scoring. We knew they'd be skilled, but BC is averaging 4.3 goals per game against a pretty challenging season-opening schedule. Every skater who has appeared in a game has at least one point this season.

3. North Dakota (4-1-1) | Last Week: 3

An unbeaten weekend against Minnesota State including a win and tie on home ice has North Dakota surging a bit. Their lone loss came to Minnesota, but more importantly one of the big questions about this team this year is being answered. Can the Fighting Hawks prevent goals? Yep. They're allowing just 1.8 goals against per game. A big reason for it is Miami transfer goalie Ludvig Persson who has started every game and owns a .933 save percentage.

4. Wisconsin (7-1-0) | Last Week: 15

After debuting on the list last week, the Bedgers are all the way up to No. 4. That's what happens when you sweep the No. 1 team in both major national polls and have rattled off seven wins over your first eight games. The Badgers' lone loss came on the road at North Dakota. Mike Hastings, who has never had a losing record as a head coach, is building up an impressive cushion with the resurgent program. Wisconsin doubled up Minnesota in total goals over the weekend series, 8-4.

5. Providence (4-1-1) | Last Week: 5

The Friars looked poised to be on the rise, but a tie against Vermont was a bit of an unexpected stumble in an otherwise strong start to the campaign. That 2-2 tie was the first time all season Providence failed to score four or more goals in a game. A suddenly very big home-and-home series with UNH awaits this weekend.

6. Minnesota (3-3-0) | Last Week: 2

A sweep at the hands of a hated rival to open conference play on home ice means three straight losses after opening the season with three straight wins. I don't think Minnesota is a bad team, nor do I think this recent stretch is instructive for how their season will go. It is a tough pill to swallow, though. Their offense has to find some consistency quickly.

7. Cornell (2-0-0) | Last Week: 8

The Big Red welcomed a surging Minnesota Duluth squad to Ithaca for the first time and out-scored them 7-1 over the weekend series. Ian Shane appears to be in top form while Cornell's team defense looks solid. They allowed just 35 shots on net over the entire series. Awfully stingy, but also exactly how Cornell expects to play.

8. Michigan (5-2-1) | Last Week: 9

The Wolverines finally grabbed a series sweep last weekend. They tattooed Lindenwood 10-1 and 9-1 over the series. Michigan has five players in the teens in point totals with Rutger McGroarty (WPG) and T.J. Hughes leading the way with 15 apiece. Last weekend didn't really tell us much about this team, but a road weekend at Wisconsin sure will. That series looks like it could be an absolute blast.

9. Quinnipiac (4-3-0) | Last Week: 6

The team that won its first ever national championship last year in overtime has played in four OT games so far this season and even saw their exhibition game go into extra time. The Bobcats are in every game, but they're 1-3 in OT so far which is augmenting their win-loss record enough to make you wonder if they've got any of last year's magic left. They still compete and they've got pieces to challenge anyone.

10. Boston University (3-2-1) | Last Week: 10

Unbeaten last weekend with a win and a tie against UMass, the Terriers should be gaining some confidence as they continue on. Freshman forward Macklin Celebrini (2024) was recently named national rookie of the month for starting the season with eight goals and 11 points. If he wants to be the fourth freshman to win the Hobey Baker, he's off to a tremendous start and is scoring at a comparable rate as Jack Eichel an Adam Fantilli did in their freshman seasons at this same point.

11. Western Michigan (3-0-1) | Last Week: 11

Idle last weekend, the Broncos are heading on the road to take on Omaha as they open NCHC play. After taking care of two CCHA teams in their first two series of the season, they might find the goals a bit tougher to come by, but there's a lot to like about Western Michigan early. The question is, as it was last year, if they have the goaltending to stick with the big guys.

12. New Hampshire (4-1-0) | Last Week: NR

Welcome back to the party, UNH! The Wildcats have key wins over Boston University and Quinnipiac. Last weekend, they dropped both Northeastern and Dartmouth. Freshman Ryan Conmy (LAK) has been an early bright spot, leading the team with seven points through the first five games. Providence may offer UNH its biggest test to date as they'll take on the Friars in a home-and-home series.

13. Michigan State (5-3-0) | Last Week: 7

There's no shame in getting swept on the road to Boston College, but if there's an area of concern for the Spartans to date, it's goal prevention. Michigan State has allowed three or more goals in each of their last six games. Neither of the team's goaltenders has a save percentage over .900 at the moment, but in some cases they have outscored their problems there. That will be tough to sustain over a season, though.

14. Maine (3-1-0) | Last Week: NR

After welcoming UNH back to the table, how about a hearty welcome back to the Black Bears! They've got wins over RPI and a split against Quinnipiac, but you can see a lot of the pieces that will make Maine a better team this year. Victor Ostman is one of the top free agents in college hockey an a standout goaltender. Also, top recruits Bradly (CAR) and Josh Nadeau are tied for the team lead with four points and look dangerous.

15. Arizona State (4-1-1) | Last Week: 13

The Sun Devils went winless on their first road series of the season, with a loss and a tie at Miami. ASU has a team save percentage of .935 currently, despite one game where they allowed five goals. T.J. Semptimphelter has taken most of the starts, while sophomore goalie Gibson Homer made a splashy start last weekend, stopping 23 shots in a 1-1 tie.

16. Minnesota Duluth (3-2-2) | Last Week: 14

The Bulldogs went out to Ithaca and got swept by Cornell. It was especially hard for them to find the net and that likely won't get easier. The big question they'll have to answer is who will step up in the absence of No. 1 center Dominic James (CHI) who is out for the rest of the season.

Dropped Out: UMass, Holy Cross
