It’s approaching 90 degrees in Edina, Minnesota, which makes it perfect weather for… hockey. It wouldn’t be the State of Hockey if there wasn’t action on the ice even in the summer heat and in Da Beauty League, you won’t find better summer hockey anywhere else.

FloHockey will be the exclusive home for Da Beauty League over its seven-week season, with games featuring a number of established NHL stars, up-and-coming prospects and a host of local legends. We’ll take you all the way through to the championship game, and the battle for the John Scott Cup.

It all starts Wednesday night with a trio of games live from Braemar Arena at 6 p.m. ET.

What is Da Beauty League?

Started in 2015, Da Beauty League was formed to bring some of the best players spending their summers in Minnesota together under one roof to put on a show and help bring some of the State of Hockey's best closer to the fans. With rosters comprised of current NHL players, minor league pros and college hockey stars, Da Beauty League brings these top players within arm’s reach close to the communities many of them grew up in. It offers the players a chance to showcase their talents, while giving back by interacting with the many fans that come out each night to watch them play.

With games played at Braemar Arena in Edina, home of one of Minnesota’s most storied high school hockey programs, fans get a chance to see some of their favorite players up close in a way that isn’t possible for many during the regular season. 

Da Beauty League is comprised of six teams, all named for league sponsors -- Bic, Element, Nor-Son, Tradition, TRIA and Walser. Throughout the season, each game night will consist of three hour-long contests.

For many of the players, Da Beauty League serves multiple purposes. It offers them a chance to play competitive hockey against individuals of similar talents, helping them prepare for the season ahead. Though the games may lack the intensity of the Stanley Cup Playoffs, the skill on display is second to none.

When the puck drops, you’re bound to see spectacular plays, high skill, speed, big saves and some of the best summer hockey you’d ever want to watch.

Who To Watch

Da Beauty League boasts a large roster of current NHL players that are committed to appear at various points of this season. Here’s a look at some of the familiar NHL faces you’ll see this season:

Jake Guentzel, Nor-Son: Fresh off a stellar season during which Guentzel collected his second 40-goal season and a career-best 84 points, the Nebraska-born, Minnesota-raised star will be among those putting on a show in Da Beauty League this season. A Stanley Cup champion as a rookie with the Pittsburgh Penguins in 2017, Guentzel has grown into one of the team’s most important forwards and was one of only 17 players across the NHL to score 40 or more goals last season.

Brock Boeser, Walser: The pride of Burnsville, Minnesota, just completed his fifth NHL season and fourth scoring more than 20 goals. The one-time Calder Trophy finalist and all-rookie selection also recently signed an extension with the Vancouver Canucks, who drafted him in the first round in 2015, for three more years.

Brock Nelson, Nor-Son: Perhaps one of the game’s most underrated players, Nelson quietly put together the most productive season of his career in 2021-22 with the New York Islanders. A 2010 first-round pick of the Isles, Nelson scored 37 goals and had 59 points in his ninth season on Long Island. A proud son of Hockeytown, U.S.A. — Warroad, Minnesota, Nelson has been a staple at Da Beauty League over the years and is part of one of Minnesota’s most legendary hockey families — The Christians. Brock’s grandfather Bill Christian and uncle Dave Christian each won Olympic gold medals in hockey in 1960 and 1980, respectively.

Nate Schmidt, TRIA: One of the real characters of the game, Nate Schmidt has been a fan favorite and teammate favorite everywhere he’s been. The former Minnesota Golden Gopher has carved out a solid NHL career despite never being drafted and put up 32 points in 77 games in his first season with the Winnipeg Jets.

K'Andre Miller, Bic: In just his second NHL season in 2021-22, Miller established himself as a top-four defenseman in the NHL with a breakout year for the New York Rangers. Picked in the first round in 2018, Miller didn't take long to find his way to the NHL roster and carve out a role for himself. He didn't miss a game this season as he helped New York reach the Eastern Conference Final

Ben Meyers, TRIA: Representing a bevy of NHL prospects that will be playing in Da Beauty League this season, the 2021-22 campaign was a life-changing one for the 23-year-old from Delano, Minn. He captained the Minnesota hockey team to the NCAA Men’s Frozen Four, was a finalist for the Hobey Baker Memorial Award, signed as an undrafted free agent with Colorado, appeared in five NHL games and scored his first goal. Now he’ll join the defending Stanley Cup champion on a full-time basis next season, but first we’ll get to see him in Da Beauty League.

What do they play for?

Da Beauty League’s season culminates Aug. 24 with the battle for the John Scott Cup. Named after hockey’s cult icon John Scott, who is the “quasi-Commissioner” and whose likeness was used for the logo of the league, the John Scott Cup is maybe the most coveted piece of summer hockey hardware.

Beyond getting their picture on that beautiful trophy and some summertime bragging rights, the players are also playing to help grow the game and raise money for a number of local charities. A portion of the proceeds from the league go to:

• The United Heroes League, which actively works to ensure that children of military service members can afforded every opportunity to participate in sports.”
• The Shine A Ligh7 Foundation, which supports programs that deliver youth mental health education and awareness across Minnesota.
• The Hendrickson Foundation, which “seeks to enrich the lives of individuals with disabilities, and their families, through the game of hockey. They work to make hockey accessible for all who want to play the game.
• The Herb Brooks Foundation, which is dedicated to growing the game through the teachings of legendary coach and Minnesotan Herb Brooks.
