Early Boston College Mistakes Help Michigan Tech Sink No. 13 Eagles

Michigan Tech downed the No. 13 Boston College Eagles 4-3 on Friday night for the first win at the inaugural Ice Vegas Invitational.

Michigan Tech will play in its third tournament championship this season. They claimed the Ice Breaker in early October, but fell to Bowling Green for the Great Lakes Invitational title on Tuesday.

It was all Boston College for the first 10 minutes before a Michigan Tech power play saw them take over — a trend that sank the Eagles in the end.

Dylan Stamen had a solid look that turned into a lengthy review, which then turned into a penalty shot. He gained speed before sliding it between Ryan Edquist’s legs for the game’s first goal.

With under five minutes remaining in the period, the Huskies garnered another power play after Jacob Tortora took a five-minute unsportsmanlike misconduct. Captain Brent Baltus scored 29 seconds in the man advantage for his team-leading 18th point of the year. Alex Smith then scored on a five-on-three to end the period up 3-0.

The Eagles tallied two on the power play just over halfway through the third to make it a one-goal game. Casey Fitzgerald scored from the slot on a recovering Devin Kero shortly before Graham McPhee sent one in off of Huskies defenseman Tyler Heinonen to make it a one-goal game.

Michigan Tech regained control in the third period. Gavin Gould scored a beautiful short-sided goal to put the Huskies up 4-2. With just 1:11 remaining, Eagles defenseman Michael Kim closed the gap to one goal.

The Eagles eventually ran out of time for a comeback and fell to the Huskies 4-3 in Vegas’ first-ever college hockey game.

Michigan Tech will face the winner of Arizona State and Northern Michigan at 11:30 PM EST, tomorrow for the championship. Boston College will face the loser for a consolation game at 8 PM.
