The Toledo Walleye will look to bring home the Kelly Cup as they've reached the finals after becoming Western Conference champions.

The Toledo Walleye are one step closer to winning that elusive Kelly Cup after dispatching the Kansas City Mavericks in five games during the Western Conference Finals.

The Walleye earned a 5-2 win in Game 5 to end the series and punch their ticket to the Kelly Cup Finals for the first time since 2022. They will await the winner of the Eastern Conference finals featuring the Trois-Rivières Lions and three-time defending champion Florida Everblades.

The Walleye got a three-point night from ECHL MVP Brandon Hawkins, who now leads the Kelly Cup Playoffs with 22 points in 15 games. The last time Toledo reached the final series, Hawkins was on a similar tear, eventually finishing the postseason with a league-best 33 points.

Though Toledo has been among the league’s most successful regular-season teams since coming into the ECHL in 2009 with seven division titles and three regular-season crowns to their name, the Kelly Cup has been just outside of their grasp. The club has reached the finals twice previously, in 2019 and 2022.

The Walleye's predecessors, the Toledo Storm, did win two ECHL championships, in 1993 and 1994 when the trophy was known as the Riley Cup. It's still been a long time since the most coveted cup in the league has been hoisted over T-Town.

Now they’ll get their chance, but they’ll have to wait a bit.

Trois-Rivières has a 3-2 series lead on Florida as they hope to do the seemingly unthinkable and knock off the Everblades. They’ll have to do it on the road, though, against a team that hasn’t lost a playoff series since 2021.

For now, Toledo can sit back and relax and let those other teams beat up on each other, with Game 6 set for Tuesday. But the Walleye will want to stay ready and stay sharp. They have every reason to believe they can take home the Kelly Cup for the first time ever, but the job is not yet done.
