Brandon Hawkins is known as The Mayor around Toledo and odds are that if he really ever did run for office, he’d win in a landslide. That’s especially true after the Toledo Walleye’s veteran forward claimed the Warrior Hockey ECHL MVP Award for the second straight season.

Hawkins became the first repeat winner of the ECHL’s MVP award since Chad Costello went back-to-back in 2016 and 2017. Hawkins and Costello are the only two players to have ever won the award in consecutive seasons, but Hawkins will have to win it again in order to catch Costello who was a three-time MVP, most of any player in league history.

According to the ECHL, Hawkins edged out Florida Everblades goalie Cam Johnson, Kansas City Mavericks forward Cade Borchardt, Wichita Thunder forward Peter Bates and Bloomington Bison forward Eddie Matsushima to secure his repeat win.

With 89 points in 71 games this season, Hawkins won the league’s scoring title for the second straight season. Over the last three seasons, he’s had no fewer than 81 points.

One of the league’s most colorful personalities in addition to being the top player, Hawkins and the Walleye got off to a good start in their postseason with a Game 1 win over the Indy Fuel Thursday night.

In 343 career games in the ECHL, Hawkins has 399 points including 190 goals. He has an additional 78 points in 62 games in the Kelly Cup Playoffs, which included a run to the Kelly Cup title with Fort Wayne in 2021.

The Toledo Walleye are still seeking that elusive first Kelly Cup and the Macomb, Michigan native is on a mission to help bring it home.
