Shortly after the parent Columbus Blue Jackets completed their regular-season finale with a 6-1 home win against the New York Islanders, they assigned goaltender Jet Greaves and defenseman Denton Mateychuk to the Monsters.
Cleveland enters this weekend fifth in the Atlantic Division with 81 points. The fourth-place Toronto Marlies have 82 points and also remain in the playoff hunt. Cleveland also has the fast-charging Belleville Senators only three points behind in sixth place. The Monsters visit the Lehigh Valley Phantoms on Friday night before a short trip north to face the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins on Saturday night. Among the potential pathways to the postseason, Monsters win Friday or a Belleville regulation loss at Laval would clinch a playoff berth for Cleveland.
Toronto starts a home-and-home series at Rochester on Friday and is also positioned to clinch a playoff berth.
Last season the Monsters went to Game 7 of the Eastern Conference Finals against the Hershey Bears, coming back from a 3-0 hole in the series. Greaves played a major role in that postseason run, going 8-5 | 2.17 | .926 in 13 games. Immediately after completing his run with the Moose Jaw Warriors to the Memorial Cup, Mateychuk joined the Monsters and played the final four games of the Hershey series and fit in quickly.
Greaves, 24, showed considerable promise with the Blue Jackets this season, playing 11 games and finishing 7-2-2 | 1.91 | .938 before Columbus finally was eliminated from Stanley Cup Playoff contention on Wednesday. He also played 40 games for the Monsters and was 21-11-6 | 2.62 | .920.

Mateychuk, 20, had a sizzling start with the Monsters before sticking with the Blue Jackets in December. Selected in the first round of the 2022 NHL Draft, he ended up playing 44 games with Columbus and was 4-9-13. In his 27 games with Cleveland, he had 9-16-25.
