The Bakersfield Condors’ battle for a trip to the Calder Cup Playoffs continues when they visit the Coachella Valley Firebirds this Saturday in the FloHockey AHL Game of the Week (9:00 p.m. ET).

Bakersfield (30-28-7-3) took care of business and also got help on the out-of-town scoreboard Friday night. Along with their 5-0 home win against the San Diego Gulls, the Tucson Roadrunners lost at Rockford, 6-3. The night’s results pulled the Condors to within one point of the Roadrunners for the seventh and last playoff spot in the Pacific Division. Bakersfield also holds a game in hand on Tucson. The Condors have won two of their three visits to Acrisure Arena, and all three contests have been one-goal decisions.

Coachella Valley (36-24-3-5), the Calder Cup finalist in each of the past two seasons, clinched a playoff berth last weekend and is coming off a 1-0 overtime loss at Acrisure Arena to the San Jose Barracuda this past Wednesday night. Fourth in the Pacific Division, the Firebirds are four points behind the third-place Ontario Reign and have a three-point edge on the Barracuda in fifth place.

The Firebirds will finish their weekend at home Sunday against the Gulls. A home date next Friday with the Abbotsford Canucks followed the next night with a trip to San Diego will complete their regular-season schedule. Bakersfield has the Canucks at home next Wednesday before a home-and-home series with the Henderson Silver Knights next weekend.

Bakersfield Condors (Edmonton Oilers)

Bakersfield’s goaltending picture has settled down with the return of Olivier Rodrigue from the Oilers. Collin Delia, who had allowed seven goals in last appearance March 22, stepped back into the Bakersfield crease this week. He handled Henderson with 34 saves in a 4-2 road win this past Wednesday and stopped 28 shots in Friday’s shutout. Rodrigue got his first NHL action while on recall to the Oilers, making a relief appearance at Seattle on March 27 before making his first start April 7 at Anaheim in a 3-2 loss.

The Bakersfield blue line lost Cam Dineen on recall to the Oilers on Thursday before his reassignment Friday. His 43 points (9-34-43) in 59 games lead all team defensemen. Connor Carrick, an offseason addition and former Firebird, has 17 goals and 39 points while his 184 shots lead the team.

Leading the Bakersfield attack is captain Seth Griffith (19-47-66), the AHL’s assists leader. He has missed the past two games, however. Drake Caggiula has a team-leading 23 goals while rookie AHL All-Star Matthew Savoie, the ninth overall pick in the 2022 NHL Draft, is fourth in AHL rookie scoring with 18-32-50 through 62 games. Forward Noah Philp joined the Oilers on recall this week. James Hamblin posted 2-2-4 in Friday's win as well.

Bakersfield is second-to-last in the AHL on the power play at 15.2 percent. Their penalty kill is 25th (79.0 percent).

Coachella Valley Firebirds (Seattle Kraken)

First-year netminder Nikke Kokko made 27 saves against San Jose to earn a point. He is joined by Victor Östman, who played 32 games with their ECHL affiliate, the Kansas City Mavericks.

Max Lajoie leads an experienced group of defensemen with 4-33-37. He is joined by Niklas Brouillard, Gustav Olofsson, Ville Ottavainen, and rookie Ty Nelson.

Forward Ben Meyers heads the team in scoring with 22-24-46. Seattle returned forward Jani Nyman (26 goals in his first AHL season and second in team scoring at 41 points) to the Firebirds this week, but Ryan Winterton remains with the Kraken. After posting a career-best 32 goals last season, captain Max McCormick has been limited to 19 games and has not played since Jan. 11. Rookie Jagger Firkus, a 2022 second-rounder, is at 13-20-33 through 65 games. The team also added forward prospect Oscar Fisker Mølgaard, who has spent the past three seasons in the SHL with HV71 Jonkoping and has appeared in his first three games with the Firebirds. Seattle took Mølgaard in the second round of the 2023 NHL Draft.

Seattle also placed defenseman Cale Fleury and forward John Hayden on waivers Friday afternoon.

The Coachella Valley power play is 11th in the AHL at 19.1 percent. They have the league’s second-best penalty kill at 85.8 percent.
