Manchester Regional Matchup Previews
Boston College vs. Bentley
Connor Hasley has been terrific and led Bentley to the program's first conference title and tournament berth last Saturday, knocking off top-seeded Holy Cross. Hasley owns an NCAA-best 11 shutouts and ranks ninth in both save percentage and GAA, and grad forward Ethan Leyh has been one of the top forwards in Atlantic Hockey.
However, Hasley hasn't faced anything close to BC's potent lineup that includes Ryan Leonard, Gabe Perreault, James Hagens and Teddy Stiga, among many others. The Eagles come to Manchester averaging 3.5 goals per game and Leonard is the nation's individual point leader.
Jacob Fowler has been tremendous in his sophomore season too and has allowed a goal or less in five of his past seven starts. Fowler's seven shutouts rank second among NCAA goalies and his 24 wins are tied for third.
While strange things tend to happen at this time of year, knocking off BC would be quite the mountain for the Falcons to climb.
Providence vs. Denver
Providence swept Colorado College in early December and would love to remain perfect against teams from the state this season, although knocking off the defending champs is never easy.
Providence finished fifth in Hockey East but lost to UConn in its first tournament game, and the Friars are 5-4-1 over their past 10. They've struggled to score on most of those nights too, which had been an issue earlier in the second half, and their 102 goals ranks 33rd in the country. Yet Providence plays fast, has depth and is the tournament's No. 8 overall seed.
Denver needs no introduction to the NCAA Tournament. The Pioneers are making their fourth consecutive appearance and will be pursuing their 11th national championship. DU's 10 is already the most in the country.
The Pioneers nearly earned more hardware last weekend too. DU led Western Michigan 3-0 but ultimately fell to the Broncos in double overtime in the NCHC Frozen Faceoff Championship Game. However, it's in the past and DU is 8-3-0 since the final weekend in February.
Offense is the furthest thing from an issue as the Pioneers average four goals per game. David Carle knows how to win, the roster is loaded with talent and Matt Davis continues to win, especially with the timely saves. There's no undermining the value of previous tournament experience either.
