Allentown Regional Matchup Previews
UConn vs. Quinnipiac
UConn is making its NCAA Tournament debut while Quinnipiac is making its sixth consecutive trip.
Quinnipiac fell to Cornell in the ECAC Semifinals and found itself on the bubble, but the Bobcats are once again playing in late-March. Quinnipiac finished 12th in the Pairwise and heads to Allentown averaging the nation’s sixth-most goals per game (3.6). The Bobcats also allow just 2.1 per game – which is tied for fourth.
Quinnipiac’s special teams have been a strength all year too as its power play (29.9%) is the nation’s best and its penalty kill (87.5%) ranks third. Matej Marinov has also been good of late in net. The sophomore made 19 saves against Cornell but suffered the loss, which snapped a 12-game win streak.

However, UConn has been one of the nation’s best stories and the Huskies are the nation’s No. 6 seed for a reason. Mike Cavanaugh’s club features plenty of depth, three 40-point producers and a pair of talented goalies – Tyler Muszelik and freshman Callum Tung.
Despite falling to Maine in the Hockey East Championship Game, the Huskies are 8-1-1 over their past 10. UConn also won the lone regular-season matchup between the two in-state rivals – a 2-1 victory on Jan. 24.
Maine vs. Penn State
No team has been hotter in the second half than Penn State. After an 0-8-0 start in conference play, the Nittany Lions went 11-3-4 from Jan. 1 on, swept Michigan and advanced to the Big Ten Semifinals. Aiden Fink has been one fire and his 52 points rank third in the country, and Penn State’s 130 goals are tied for seventh.
Penn State also has the advantage of playing in its back yard as the host school, yet they’ll have to solve one of the nation’s top goaltenders in Albin Boija. The sophomore owns the nation’s fifth-best save percentage (.930) and fourth-best GAA (1.76), and Boija led the Black Bears to a Hockey East tournament title.
Maine’s roster also features a number of talented scorers, starting with Taylor Makar. The senior has been one of Maine’s go-to forwards and also has come through in the clutch. Makar has six game-winning tallies.
