Toledo Regional Matchup Previews
Michigan State vs. Cornell
Michigan State is coming off a 4-3 win over Ohio State in the Big Ten Championship Game. The Spartans have been one of, if not the nation’s top-ranked team all season and head to Toledo as the No. 2 overall seed.
Isaac Howard was named the Big Ten Player of the Year and is coming off a two-goal, four-point showing in the Big Ten Championship Game – including the overtime winner. Howard has 51 points and points in eight of his past nine.
Karsen Dowart, one of the top undrafted free agents in the NCAA, also has 29 points (12-17-29) and Augustine’s .927 save percentage ranks 10th in the nation.

However, MSU will face a motivated Cornell squad. It’s the third consecutive tournament trip as the Big Red won their second straight ECAC title. Yet there will be an extra chip on their shoulders, as this is Mike Schafer’s final season.
Cornell is averaging 3.1 goals per game while allowing 2.2. Ian Shane has allowed a goal or less in five of his past seven starts and made 30 saves against Clarkson in the ECAC Championship Game. Ryan Walsh scored his team-leading 14th goal in the win, which snapped an eight-game goal drought.
Boston University vs. Ohio State
BU and OSU last met in 2009 – an 8-3 win for the Terriers in the NCAA Tournament. However, plenty has changed since, and the two teams are pretty evenly matched. BU and OSU are the No. 7 and No. 10 seeds in the tournament.
BU is seeking its third consecutive Frozen Four appearance and has made the tournament eight times since 2015. Despite an up-and-down first half, BU is 6-3-1 since its Beanpot win and reached the Hockey East Semifinals. Neither Cole Eiserman or Cole Hutson have looked like freshmen and Hutson was named the Hockey East Defenseman of the Year.
Freshman Mikhail Yegorov joined the program in January and made an immediate impact between the pipes too. Yegorov has stopped 362 of the 389 shots he’s seen.
Ohio State will be no easy matchup and the Buckeyes boast 24 wins. OSU reached the above-mentioned Big Ten Championship Game and forced overtime but ultimately fell to Michigan State. Gunnarwolfe Fontaine had six points (4-2-6) in the playoffs and leads OSU in goals (17) and points (40).

Fontaine transferred to Ohio State after four seasons at Northeastern, and he’s made an immediate impact in Columbus. His previous career high was 30 points.
BU averages 3.7 goals per game while OSU comes in at 3.2, which are tied for fourth and 17th respectively. OSU is also one of the nation’s least-penalized teams (7.69 PIM) while BU averages an NCAA-high 13.4 minutes per game.
How can I watch?
Thursday’s first game and Saturday will both be televised on ESPNU. Thursday night’s battle between Michigan State and Cornell will be available on ESPN+.
Where are the games played?
All three games will be played at Huntington Center, the home of the ECHL’s Toledo Walleye. The arena seats roughly 8,000 fans and has been open since the fall 2009.
