The Western Conference-leading Colorado Eagles host the Tucson Roadrunners this Saturday night in the FloHockey AHL Game of the Week (9:00 p.m. ET).

At 35-16-5-3, the Eagles also rank third in the AHL in both points (78) and point percentage (.661). They have a three-point edge on the Texas Stars for the Western Conference lead. Tucson (29-25-3-2), on a 7-3-1-0 run, is locked in a battle with Bakersfield for the seventh playoff spot in the Pacific Division and holds a two-point lead on the Condors. Bakersfield hosts the San Jose Barracuda on Saturday and holds one game in hand on the Roadrunners.

Colorado has taken three of the four meetings between the clubs, including sweeping the Roadrunners at Tucson Arena on Dec. 28-29. The clubs split a two-game series on opening weekend at Colorado. They will conclude their season series with a pair of games at Tucson on the final weekend of the regular season.

AHL All-Star Jacob MacDonald has 7-6-13 in his past 10 games for the Eagles and is tied for the league lead in scoring among defensemen (27-21-48). His 27 goals tie him for fourth in the AHL, and he has a 13-goal lead among all blueliners.

Saturday’s meeting with Colorado opens a five-game road trip for the Roadrunners, who will face the Eagles again in a Sunday matinee.

Tucson Roadrunners (Utah Hockey Club)

Tucson swept a pair of games at home against San Jose last weekend. Andrew Agozzino had a hat trick in last Saturday’s 6-3 win against the Barracuda. Max Szuber contributed three assists in that game along with another assist and the deciding shootout tally in the following contest against the Barracuda, a 6-5 victory.

With Jaxson Stauber on recall to Utah, Matthew Villalta has made five consecutive starts. The 25-year-old is 16-20-3 | 2.99 | .906, and his 39 games rank him second among AHL goaltenders.

Maveric Lamoureux, selected 29th overall in the 2022 NHL Draft, has 2-10-12 in 29 games as a rookie while also appearing in 15 contests for Utah.  Robbie Russo (3-26-29) leads all Tucson blueliners in points while rookie Artem Duda is at 3-21-24 through 57 games. Szuber, veteran Kevin Connauton, and Lleyton Moore round out the Tucson defense corps. Montana Onyebuchi will miss both games at Colorado as he serves a three-game suspension for physical abuse of an official last Saturday night.

Cameron Hebig’s 21 goals lead the team while Kailer Yamamoto (18-32-50 in 49 games) tops Tucson in scoring and is also tied for ninth in the AHL. Egor Sokolov has 20 tallies while Agozzino is at 17. Curtis Douglas, working on a line with second-rounder Julian Lutz and Ryan McGregor, is on a four-game goal streak.

Tucson’s power play is ninth in the AHL (20.0 percent) while the penalty kill is 20th (81.0 percent). After completing this five-game road trip, the Roadrunners will play four of their final six games on home ice.

Colorado Eagles (Colorado Avalanche)

The Eagles, who top the AHL in both goals per game (3.51) as well goals-against (2.49), got one win out of a two-game visit from the Condors to Blue Arena earlier this week.

Trent Miner is fourth in the AHL in both goals-against average (2.15) and save percentage (.917) while going 16-7-6 in 29 games. He had shutouts in back-to-back games against Ontario on Feb. 28-March 1 and has one goal in three of his past five appearances since then. The 2019 seventh-round pick also made his NHL debut earlier this season with the Avalanche. Adam Scheel (10-1-2 | 2.44 | .912) took last Wednesday’s start, a 4-3 win, and had 22 saves.

MacDonald has four goals in his past three games and has hit the 20-goal mark for the second time in his AHL career. He headlines a deep blueline that features Wyatt Aamodt, Jack Ahcan, John Ludvig, Calle Rosén, and Devante Stephens. Both MacDonald and Rosén are in their second career stints with the Eagles.

Two-time AHL most valuable player T.J. Tynan (8-37-45) and Matthew Phillips (17-28-45) help to lead Colorado’s potent offense. Phillips had 36 goals two seasons ago with the Calgary Wranglers. Captain Jayson Megna is at 14-28-42. Chris Wagner has 16 goals in just 34 contests while Tye Felhaber, who converted an AHL deal into an NHL contract this past December, has reached AHL career bests in goals (17), assists (16), and points (33). Jere Innala, signed by the Avalanche last June following a standout Liiga and SHL career, has 14-11-25 in 38 games.

Oskar Olausson, taken 28th overall by the Avs in 2021, has 10-12-22 in 55 games. Two seventh-round picks, rookies Chase Bradley and Nikita Prishchepov, both have made their NHL debuts with the Avalanche and further complement head coach Aaron Schneekloth’s deep forward group.

Colorado is sixth in the AHL on both the power play (21.4 percent) and the penalty kill (84.5 percent).
