New York Rangers Pick Brody Lamb Standing Out In Junior Year At Minnesota

Brody Lamb entered the Christmas break with 19 points (12-7-19) through 19 games as the New York Rangers pick (2021, 4th) enjoyed a tremendous start to his junior campaign.

However, the second half hasn’t been so kind on the score sheet, as Lamb carried an 11-game goal drought into this past weekend’s series against Ohio State. He scored in Minnesota’s first game out of the break against Mercyhurst, but had just one point – a Feb. 1 assist – over those 11 games too.

Lamb picked a great time to end that drought, putting together a four-point (3-1-4) weekend and lifting the Gophers to the top of the Big Ten standings.

Lamb – who is listed at 6-foot-1 and 165 pounds, scored Minnesota’s first and third goals on Friday as the Gophers opened the series with a 4-1 win. They completed the sweep on Saturday in 6-3 fashion, and Lamb scored Minnesota’s fifth tally of the contest.

Minnesota (23-7-4, 14-5-3) has lit the lamp 135 times through 34 games and is averaging 4.0 goals per game, which is tied with Denver for the NCAA’s best mark. Those 135 goals are also six ahead of Denver for the most in the country.

As for Lamb individually, the Rochester, Minn. product ranks sixth on the team with 25 points and his 16 goals rank second – trailing only Jimmy Snuggerud (21). He owns a team-leading eight power-play goals, which is tied for fifth in the country, and he’s also one of just 24 NCAA players with 16 or more tallies this season.

Lamb entered his junior year with 35 points (16-19-35) through 78 NCAA games, including 12-15-27 last season. He’s been a key part of what’s been a rather balanced offensive attack all winter.

Bob Motzko’s club finished the regular season 14-2-2 on home ice and has earned points in 10 of its past 11 conference tilts. The lone regulation loss came to Michigan State on Jan. 24.

Minnesota can clinch its seventh Big Ten regular-season title this weekend, but it’s far from an easy task. The Gophers currently hold a two-point edge over Michigan State, who earned just one point against Penn State – Minnesota’s next opponent.

The Gophers finish the regular season in State College against a PSU club that's lost just once over its past 12 (9-1-2). Minnesota swept Penn State to open November, winning 3-1 and 1-0. Yet the tide has drastically turned for the Nittany Lions – who have been one of the nation’s top second-half teams.

Michigan State and Minnesota remain Nos. 2 and 3 in the PairWise. MSU closes out its regular season against Notre Dame this weekend.
