Final Score: USA 4 - 1 Canada

Trey Augustine wins Player of the Game and Team USA moves on to the quarterfinals in the top seed for group A and positions themselves well to earn a possible chance at their first back-to-back championships in history.

USA's Leonard Scores Empty Net Goal, 4-1

With just under two minutes remaining in the third period, Ryan Leonard nets the puck to give USA a three-goal lead.

Pinelli Called For Elbowing, USA Called For Bench Minor

In what had been a chaotic few minutes, both teams were called for penalties with just 2:51 remaining in the game.

Cole Eiserman Finishes On 7th Power Play, USA 3-1 Canada

After a short delay and moving the puck to the center, Cole Eiserman snipes the blocker side to score a goal and give Team USA the two-goal lead.

Cowan Goes To Box, Canada Discipline Failing

After a dangerous boarding hit from Cowan into Aram Minnetian, Canada gave Team USA their seventh power play chance of the game.

Carter George stood up to make early stops in the power play.

USA Fails To Convert Once Again On Power Play

As the clock ticked past 9 minutes remaining, Mulendyk came out of the penalty box and Canada's penalty kill stats continued to grow.

USA Kills Power Play Despite Crowd's Best Efforts

The fans in the Canadian Tire Centre have been cheering on the Canadian team but they have been unable to fully stop the charging Americans. Their efforts were summed up well by a last second shot by McKenna on the power play that dinged off the crossbar and bounced straight out.

Mynio Called For Cross-Checking, Sets Up USA Power Play Goal, USA 2-1

Less than a minute after the tying goal from Bradly Nadeau, Sawyer Mynio added another penalty for Canada. This time, Team USA would convert.

Danny Nelson shot a beauty from the high slot to the high blocker side off of a pass from earlier goal-scorer Cole Hutson from behind the goal line to get it past Carter George.

Nadeau Nails Beautiful One-Timer Putting Canada On Board, 1-1

Team Canada's Bradly Nadeau scored off of a pass through the middle from Brayden Yager. Tanner Molendyk earned an assist as well.

Stage Is Set For Thrilling Third Period

Second Period Ends: USA 1 - 0 Canada, Momentum Swings Towards Canada

SHOTS ON GOAL

  • USA:
    • 1st period: 5
    • 2nd period: 13
  • Canada:
    • 1st period: 11
    • 2nd period: 15

PENALTIES

  • USA:
    • PP: 1/4
    • PIM: 10
  • Canada:
    • PP: 0/2
    • PIM: 14

After a period full of penalties for Canada, USA's offense struggled to convert and captain Ryan Leonard was called for a roughing penalty after the buzzer.

Canada held strong with a lot of help from Carter George and have a chance to take the momentum fully in their control at the start of the third period if they can capitalize better than USA on the power play.

Canada Called For Third Penalty In Ten Minutes, Kill It Yet Again

Sam Dickinson was called for holding which sent Team USA on another power play that was once again killed despite a few more chaotic chances by the Americans.

Canada Kills Another Power Play With 5 Minutes Remaining In Second

With 7 minutes remaining in the second period, Rehkopf was sent to the box again, this time for tripping Zeev Buium. Team USA had a number of dangerous chances but were simply unable to get the aim locked in with many going wide.

Carter George has been impressive so far on the kill for Canada, keeping things close when the USA offense is able to get set up and hit their target.

USA Goes On Second Power Play Halfway Through Second, Canada Kills It

Halfway through the game, USA's netminder Trey Augustine has been an unsolvable puzzle for the Canada offense despite their successful setups. Off of a dangerous chance for Canada that caused Augustine to lose his stick, Carson Rehkopf used his own to push it further away, earning an interference penalty.

Canada Goes On First Power Play After Hensler Holding, USA Kills It

About five minutes into the second, Canada goes a man up. In a board battle deep in the USA zone, Logan Hensler was called for holding Mathieu Cataford to give Canada their first power play of the night.

With just ten seconds remaining in the power play, Trey Augustine made a stop in front of the net, but the puck came loose and gave the Canada offense a chance to poke at it. Eventually, he would gather the puck and cover.

2nd Period Begins

The ice is flipped and it's time for round two of three (at least) between these two heavyweight teams in their battle for the top seed heading into the 2025 IIHF World Junior Championship quarterfinals on Thursday, January 2.

1st Period Ends: USA Leads 1-0 Over Canada In World Juniors

It was twenty minutes of end-to-end action as both teams struggled to get the puck to the net despite some great looking chances. Team USA found their footing more quickly, with a little help from a tripping penalty.

The physicality in hits and post-whistle extracurriculars escalated to the midpoint and continued all the way through the end of the period.

As the horn blew, both team's lines on the ice once again found themselves in the middle of some "extra stuff."

Scrum Breaks Out After Catton Drives The Net

After what has been a very physical start to the game, nearly everyone on the ice found a face to stick their glove into after a shot attempt by Berkly Catton driving the net to Augustine's doorstep. Luca Pinelli and Zeev Buium were the most angry, being sure to finish their conversation pleasantly in the penalty box for roughing.

USA Scores First On Powerplay, 1 - 0 over Canada

Sam Dickinson was called for tripping with eight minutes remaining in the period. Cole Hutson scored with the assist from Cole Eiserman, getting it past Carter George high blocker side 40 seconds into the power play.

Scoreless After First Ten Minutes, Canada 0 - 0 USA

Offensively, it has been a slow start for both teams in the first half of the period to kick off tonight's New Year's Eve festivities. The fire and physicality from these two teams has been on full display, however.

USA's Cole Hutson hit the post on their best chance yet but it quickly turned into an opportunity for Canada the other way—which didn't convert either.

Trey Augustine made his first stop of the night about 90 seconds into the first period. Canada's early offensive chances came from Berkly Catton, Easton Cowan, and Mathieu Cataford.

Going into the first TV timeout about eight minutes into the period, there was some shoving between Ryan Leonard and Easton Cowan that led to a pair of unsportsmanlike penalties.

The 1st Period Is Underway

What a way to close out the year, with two of the best junior hockey teams in the world facing off.
