Two Southern California rivals meet when the Coachella Valley Firebirds visit the Ontario Reign this Saturday in the FloHockey AHL Game of the Week (9:00 p.m. ET).

On Friday night the Reign visited Acrisure Arena and took away a 4-1 win for their first victory in four contests between the clubs so far. Samuel Fagemo had two more goals, giving him 14 in 23 games this season while Pheonix Copley provided 32 saves. Ontario (15-8-0-0) has won five games in a row and nine of 10 to climb into a third-place tie in the Pacific Division.

After going to the Calder Cup Finals in back-to-back years, the Firebirds went through significant offseason roster changes along with the hiring of head coach Derek Laxdal. Coachella Valley had a 7-1-0-2 run in November, but three wins in December have left the Firebirds (13-10-1-3) even with the Reign and Tucson at 30 points.

Coachella Valley Firebirds (Seattle Kraken) – What to Watch For
Captain Max McCormick is one of the few veteran holdovers from the Firebirds’ past two Calder Cup Playoff runs now that Seattle has been able to cycle more prospects and draft picks into the Coachella Valley line-up.
Offseason signing Ben Meyers has the team scoring lead with 9-10-19 in 22 games while rookie forward Jani Nyman is also tied with Meyers for first in goals on the Coachella Valley roster. Nyman, 20, is in his first AHL season after a 26-goal effort last season with Liiga club Ilves Tampere. Seattle selected him in the second round of the 2022 NHL Draft.
Nyman is a key part of that growing Seattle prospect base that also features rookie forward Jagger Firkus. Also a 2022 second-rounder, Firkus led the CHL with 61-65-126 in 63 games with the Moose Jaw Warriors and was also named the CHL Player of the Year. He also topped the WHL playoffs with 14-18-32 in 20 games as Moose Jaw advanced to the Memorial Cup. Another forward, 19-year-old Eduard Sale, is on loan to Czechia for the IIHF World Junior Championship. The 2023 first-round pick has 4-9-13 through 23 games. Ryan Winterton has 7-8-15 after a 22-goal rookie season.
A veteran blue line features prospects Ty Nelson and Ville Ottavainen.
Yet another second-round pick from that 2022 draft class is goaltender Nikke Kokko, who is in his first season with the Firebirds after parts of three seasons in Liiga competition. The 20-year-old Kokko has gone 7-2-1 | 2.67 | .902 in 11 games and is in a tandem with veteran Ales Stezka.
Ontario Reign (Los Angeles Kings) – What to Watch For
Fagemo is one of the top focal points of a deep group of experienced forwards for head coach Marco Sturm. Still only 24 years old, the 2019 second-round choice supplied 43 goals in just 50 games last season for the Reign.
Leading scorer Glenn Gawdin (9-16-25) is joined by Charles Hudon, Tyler Madden, Jeff Malott, and Jack Studnicka to provide Ontario with an offense that is generating 3.57 goals per game. Along with Fagemo and Gawdin, Hudon has 11 goals through 23 contests. Ontario also has forward Arthur Kaliyev on a conditioning assignment from Los Angeles.
After spending time on recall with the Kings last month, Portillo is back in Ontario alongside Copley. Through nine games for the Reign, the 24-year-old has gone 7-2-0 | 2.41 | .907.
