“With guidance from our medical staff and my wife, Audrey, I decided to get checked out. After undergoing testing on Monday and consulting with medical professionals, I have decided to temporarily step back and focus on my health,” Burt said in a statement released by the team. “While this is a new challenge for me and my family, I have been a fighter my whole career, and I am preparing for what could be the fight of my life.”
The 47-year-old has been at the helm of the Rush since 2021 and has also held the dual role of head coach and general manager since 2022. Prior to joining the Rush, he was an assistant coach with the Idaho Steelheads in the ECHL and before that served as an assistant coach with the WHL’s Spokane Chiefs and ECHL’s Alaska Aces.
Burt appeared in 586 ECHL games as a player, skating for the Toledo Storm, Wheeling Nailers, Idaho Steelheads, Utah Grizzlies and Alaska Aces. His last three years as a player, he wore the “C” for Alaska. He is well known throughout the league.
The ECHL is rallying around one of their own. Several teams have adorned the “Burtie” stickers on their helmets as a show of support including one of his former teams, Wheeling.

Though they may all be rivals on the ice, the ECHL community is a tight one. There is mutual respect among the teams and team personnel and Burt has clearly been one of the more popular figures across the league. Though details about Burt's diagnosis have not been made public, the hockey world at large is showing their support in great number to let Burt know that his fight is not one that will be fought alone.
