After finishing third-from-last in the AHL last season, the Barracuda have gotten off to a 6-3-0-0 start. Leading the way has been top-end goaltending Yaroslav Askarov, a two-time AHL All-Star who came to the San Jose Sharks organization this past August in a blockbuster trade with the Nashville Predators. Askarov, 22, had been chosen by Nashville 11th overall in the 2020 NHL Draft and spent the past two seasons with the Milwaukee Admirals. This season with the Barracuda, he has gone 5-1-0 with a 1.50 goals-against average and a .950 save percentage. He recorded a shutout in each of his first two starts with the Barracuda and is considered the Sharks’ goaltender of the future.

Colorado Eagles - What To Watch For
Colorado features top playmaker T.J. Tynan, a two-time AHL most valuable player who returned to the Eagles following three seasons with the Ontario Reign. The parent Colorado Avalanche also undertook an aggressive offseason to strengthen the Eagles by bringing in a top defenseman in Jacob MacDonald and forward Matthew Phillips, who had 36 goals for the Calgary Wranglers in 2022-23 and won a Calder Cup with the Hershey Bears last season.
Another forward, Jere Innala, led the SHL in playoff goals (11) and playoff points (15) last spring with Frölunda. Former Eagles captain Jayson Megna is back in the organization as is blueliner Calle Rosen.
San Jose Barracuda - What To Watch For
Along with Askarov in net, the Barracuda also feature a deep mix of experience and high-end young talent as they work to return to the Calder Cup Playoffs.
The Sharks worked this summer to fortify their AHL affiliate’s roster, bringing in two-time AHL leading scorer Andrew Poturalski and defenseman Jimmy Schuldt from the Coachella Valley Firebirds. Also coming aboard was forward Colin White. The veteran help has joined an exciting group of top prospects that features AHL rookie point leader Collin Graf (3-9-12 in nine games); the 22-year-old forward was a two-time Hobey Baker Award finalist at Quinnipiac.
Also in the Barracuda line-up is Filip Bystedt, a 2022 first-round pick by the Sharks. He has 3-4-7 as a 20-year-old forward. Rookie Luca Cagnoni also leads all AHL defensemen with 4-5-9 in his opening nine games. The Barracuda also received defenseman Lucas Carlsson from the Sharks on Thursday. Carlsson, an offseason signing, led all AHL blueliners with 20 goals in 2022-23 while with the Charlotte Checkers.
Colorado Avalanche Prospects To Watch From Chris Peters
Jason Polin, RW
Signed as an undrafted free agent after the 2022-23 season, Polin has been finding his way and his role in pro hockey. He had just 10 points in 42 games last season after being a 30-goal scorer in college hockey the season prior. Polin's offensive game is starting to come along as he already has six points through nine games this season. The 25-year-old got into seven NHL games last year, but is starting to trend more positively based on his play this season.
Oskar Olausson, C/W
Though he's only 21, it feels like Olausson has been around for a while. The Swedish forward and first-round pick in 2021, hasn't quite made good on his potential yet, but there's still time. Through the first 10 games this season, he has four points after 20 in just 39 contests last season. Olausson needs to take a step this year if he's going to make himself part of Colorado's long-term plans. Early returns this season have been positive, but need to continue.
Nikita Prischepov, C/W
Returned from the Avalanche just in time for the weekend, Prischepov is the youngest player on the Eagles this season at 20 years old. He's in his first year of pro hockey and got three NHL games with the Avalanche, which have had to dip into their AHL roster rather often. The Russian forward had 67 points in 63 QMJHL games last year for Victoriaville. That was enough to get him drafted 217th overall by Colorado last June. He has four points in six AHL games so far this season.
San Jose Sharks Prospects To Watch From Chris Peters
Collin Graf, C/W
Signed as one of the most sought-after undrafted free agents among NCAA players last season, Graf got a small taste of the NHL at the end of last season. Now he's continuing to hone his game at the AHL level and the honing is going rather well. He leads all AHL rookies with 12 points this season. Graf has shown an ability to play with pace and has tremendous touch, distributing pucks like the gifted playmaker he was in college. Graf is playing a leading role with the Barracuda, which should give him a chance to get meaningful reps to potentially one day play up the lineup with the Sharks.
Luca Cagnoni, D
After 90 points from the blue line in the WHL last season, Cagnoni's productive ways have only continued with the Barracuda. The 5-foot-9 rearguard has nine points in nine games, which ties him for the lead among all defensemen in the AHL. He also has four goals, which is tops among AHL defensemen as well. While his size may be a concern about his overall NHL prospects, Cagnoni has proven to be a crafty offensive player who moves pucks well and adds a dynamic element to San Jose's back end in the AHL.
Filip Bystedt, LW
Bystedt started his rookie campaign with points in each of his first six games to start the season. he did get an eight-game audition in the AHL at the end of last season, scoring seven points in eight games then. Bystedt brings size and speed to San Jose's AHL lineup. He is also getting a lot of pucks to the net, playing in all situations and showing improved versatility and overall hockey sense that bode well for him reaching the Sharks roster in the nearer future.
