The Tucson Roadrunners have added two major offensive pieces to their line-up.

Forwards Josh Doan and Kailer Yamamoto have been assigned by the Utah Hockey Club to Tucson. The Roadrunners’ two-game visit to Abbotsford starts tonight. The team is then off until Nov. 9. Coming off a two-game home sweep of the Bakersfield Condors this past weekend, the Roadrunners have started 3-3-0-0.

Both players opened the season with Utah but struggled to find their place in the newly relocated team’s line-up. After playing a season-high 18:40 Oct. 12 at the New York Rangers, the 22-year-old Doan’s ice time had steadily slipped. He played nine games, picking up a goal and an assist. Last season Doan led the Roadrunners with 26 goals and 46 points as a rookie. He represented the team at the 2024 AHL All-Star Classic in San Jose and also won a spot on the AHL All-Rookie Team. Then operating as the Arizona Coyotes, the organization selected Doan in the second round of the 2021 NHL Draft. The son of Coyotes legend Shane Doan, the younger Doan also played two seasons as Arizona State.

Yamamoto, 26, went to training camp with Utah and ended up signing with the team Oct. 6 after spending last season with the Seattle Kraken. In 59 games with Seattle, he had 8-8-16. Before that, the 2017 first-round pick played parts of five seasons with the Edmonton Oilers. In three games for Utah this season, the veteran of 306 NHL went without a point. This assignment is Yamamoto’s first since 2019-20 when he was with Bakersfield. As recently as 2021-22, he had a 20-goal season with the Oilers.

Both players made their Tucson season debuts against the Canucks.
