AHL Teams That Unveiled New Looks On Opening Weekend
American Hockey League teams have never been reluctant to try new looks. Bridgeport, Grand Rapids, Hershey, Iowa, and Rockford all have unveiled new jerseys
AHL teams have considerable freedom to experiment with fashion.
Be it a new logo, an overhauled jersey (or three), or a completely revamped color scheme, AHL clubs have never been shy about Sometimes those fashion choices relate to the team’s home city. Other time it’s a play on the NHL parent club’s style. Or it’s altogether different. Even the Hershey Bears, a team in its 87th and older than all but the NHL’s Original Six, have worn a wide variety of jersey and logos through the decades.

Here’s a look as several AHL teams debuted their new looks on opening weekend.
BRIDGEPORT ISLANDERS
The Islanders unveiled that harkens back to the parent New York Islanders’ mid-1990s “Fisherman” logo. Last season’s jersey fashioned after New York’s look remains the same, but Bridgeport’s new logo took out the teal found in that 1990s logo and added the city’s name.
GRAND RAPIDS GRIFFINS
The Griffins swapped out silver for gold as a jersey accent color this season. The gold matches that the jersey with the golden in the team’s main logo. Red shoulders are also new in place of black. Of course, with the Griffins’ affiliation with the Detroit Red Wings dating back to 2002, there is still plenty of Detroit flavor to the look, including red pants.
HERSHEY BEARS
With a league-record 13 Calder Cup championships, the Bears honored their latest title with a jersey that they wore for a pair of home games this past weekend. The team also will have new main home and road jerseys that swapped out some of the previous piping for a more traditional approach. That new fashion will debut this Wednesday night at Bridgeport. The Bears also have a pair of home games this weekend against Chicago.
IOWA WILD
The Wild have gone back to a logo that they first brought out late in the 2022-23 season.
Styled after the parent Minnesota Wild’s logo, this version designed by local artist Curtis Poortinga features adjustments more fitting to the Des Moines cityscape. It’s all included within an outline of the state of Iowa. While the 2022-23 logo was used on a green jersey, this season it is on a white jersey modeled after Minnesota’s.
ROCKFORD ICEHOGS
The city of Rockford has a long manufacturing history, including the screw industry, and the IceHogs have paid tribute to its “Screw City” moniker. The latest look features an “R” with a screw motif on a black jersey trimmed in white. The team will also don the look for select home games this season.
WILKES-BARRE/SCRANTON PENGUINS
The Penguins will have a new alternate jersey featuring diagonal lettering. It’s a style similar to that worn by the original expansion-era Pittsburgh team as well as at other points throughout history.
ROCHESTER AMERICANS
Of course, there are also the Rochester Americans, who have long lived by the “don’t fix what isn’t broken” adage when it comes to their jersey fashions. The team continues to use its red-white-and-blue jerseys with the classic Amerks shield that both go back to the 1970s.
