Ahead of Saturday night’s season opener at Hershey, the Monsters announced Friday that they have signed elite sniper Rocco Grimaldi to a professional tryout agreement. The 31-year-old forward is coming off a season with the Chicago Wolves in which he finished third in the AHL with 36 goals in 72 games and second overall with 73 points. He also was named to the AHL Second All-Star Team.

The two-time AHL All-Star had been in training camp with the Carolina Hurricanes before being released, and he has played 203 NHL games with Florida, Colorado, and Nashville. The Wolves, who have resumed their affiliation with the Hurricanes after one season apart, also lost captain Chris Terry to the Bridgeport Islanders.
Cleveland has been busy lately bulking up its roster following the offseason departures of several veterans from last season’s team that went to a Game 7 overtime of the Eastern Conference Finals. Defenseman Madison Bowey, 29, signed a PTO with the Monsters after one season in the KHL split between three teams. The 2018 Stanley Cup champion last played in the AHL in 2022-23 with Laval. Cleveland also has brought in forwards Roman Ahcan, Joseph LaBate, and Chris Wilkie on PTOs.
Captain Brendan Gaunce along with Tyler Angle, Marcus Bjork, Nick Blankenburg, Josh Dunne, Carson Meyer, Billy Sweezey, Alex Whelan, and Jakub Zboril are among the offseason departures from last season's roster. Jake Christiansen, David Jiricek, and Mikael Pyyhtia also are now with the parent Columbus Blue Jackets. Cleveland won the North Division regular-season title and took playoff wins against Belleville and Syracuse before falling to Hershey, the eventual Calder Cup champion.
