Sure, with football season just getting underway, Caleb Williams and the Chicago Bears may be the talk around the water coolers in the Windy City, but Chicago Wolves hockey is right around the corner, and fans will be able to catch all of the action live on FloHockey

The Wolves are a few years removed from their 2022 Calder Cup victory and in serious need of the type of jolt Williams has brought to the Bears and their fanbase.

In their American Hockey League championship season of 2021-2022, their third Calder Cup win and fifth league championship overall, the Wolves won 50 games in the regular season alone, with no one else in the AHL winning more than 45.

The years since have seen Chicago slide from runaway favorite in the AHL Central Division to the bottom of the seven-team standings. The Wolves won 35 games and were sixth during the 2022-2023 season, before hitting rock bottom last season with just 23 victories and a last-place finish.

Were things out of whack for the Wolves last season because they were the first AHL team in almost three decades to play as an independent team, meaning they weren’t affiliated with any NHL franchise?

Who knows, but if being lone wolves for a year contributed to the team’s struggles, that problem has been solved.

In May 2024, Chicago and the NHL’s Carolina Hurricanes signed a three-year partnership agreement that will begin with the 2024-2025 season.

The two were paired from 2020-2023, before they parted ways and both played unaffiliated hockey for a year. While the Hurricanes had a solid season and advanced to the second round of the NHL playoffs, the renewed relationship and extra resources are expected to be beneficial for both teams.

When the Wolves do return to the ice for the upcoming 2024-2025 campaign, it will be under the leadership of a new head coach. The teams announced in June that 40-year-old Cam Abbott would be taking the reins.

Abbott is fresh off a stint with Rogle BK of the Swedish Hockey League (2017-2023). During the 2021-2022 season, he helped the team top the regular-season standings and go on to win the Champions Hockey League for the first time, which earned him SHL Coach of the Year honors.

As a player, the native Canadian competed professionally as a forward in Sweden, Norway and domestically in the Central Hockey League. He also played collegiately at Cornell.

Since being named head coach, Abbott has been busy putting together his staff. In late August, it was announced that Dan Price and Spiros Anastas would be assistants to Abbott and John Stanier would join the team as video coach.

The Wolves will begin their 2024-2025 season and the Abbott era at home at the Allstate Arena in Rosemont, Illinois, on Oct. 12. They’ll be hosting the Milwaukee Admirals for one game, before heading to Pennsylvania the following week for two games against the two-time defending champion Hershey Bears.

The AHL regular season features a 72-game schedule.
