Since 2021, the Utica Comets have been the American Hockey League affiliate of the New Jersey Devils, a transition that included a rebranding, new colors and a new coach. For nearly a decade prior, the team was affiliated with the Vancouver Canucks.

The new-look Comets burst onto the scene with a record 12-game winning streak to start the 2021-2022 season, and though the campaign didn’t end with a league championship, the Comets did win the North Division title.

Success in the postseason has been a challenge for the Comets, who still are looking for their first Calder Cup victory. Last season, the squad missed the playoffs completely, finishing sixth in the seven-team North Division with a 32-29-5-6 record.

The Comets have been busy adding to their roster in the offseason. Among the signees are defenseman Will MacKinnon, goaltender Jeremy Brodeur, forwards Jace Isley, Xavier Parent, Kevin O’Neil and Tag Bertuzzi – and that’s all since July 1.

The team also re-signed goalie Nico Daws to a two-year contract.

The head coach for Utica is Kevin Dineen, who was brought in during the transition of the franchise and team in 2021. 

Following his own playing career, he has served a variety of coaching roles at various levels, including an assistant coaching role with the Chicago Blackhawks that allowed him to be a part of the team’s Stanley Cup win in 2015.

The Comets will kick off their 2024-2025 campaign at home – the Adirondack Bank Center at the Utica Memorial Auditorium – on Oct. 11, as they welcome their North Division rivals the Syracuse Crunch. The AHL regular season features a 72-game schedule.

What Was The Utica Comets' Record During The 2023-2024 Season?

The Utica Comets finished the 2023-2024 season with a 32-29-5-6 record and were sixth in the seven-team North Division, missing the playoffs for the first time since the team’s rebranding in 2021. 

Five of the seven teams in the division advanced to the Calder Cup Playoffs, led by the North Division champion Cleveland Monsters.  

When Do The 2025 Calder Cup Playoffs Start?

The 2024-2025 AHL regular season will conclude during the final week of April. The Calder Cup Playoffs typically begin later the same week.

As is tradition, 23 of the AHL’s 32 teams qualify for the playoffs, landing in the playoff bracket in a variety of configurations that are based on the size of each division.

The robust postseason will come after the conclusion of 1,152 regular-season games.

Who Won The Calder Cup During The 2023-2024 AHL Season?

Last season, the Hershey Bears won a record-extending 13th Calder Cup, also their second title in a row. Amazingly, their record includes another 12 runner-up finishes. 

Who Topped Their Divisions During The 2023-2024 AHL Season?

The Hershey Bears won the Atlantic Division with a near-record 53-14-0-5 performance during the regular season.

The Cleveland Monsters won the North Division (40-24-5-3), the Milwaukee Admirals took the Central Division (47-22-2-1) and the Coachella Valley Firebirds were the victors in the 10-team Pacific Division (46-15-6-5).

When Is The AHL All-Star Classic?

The 2025 AHL All-Star Classic is being hosted by the Coachella Valley Firebirds in Palm Desert, California on Feb. 2-3. 

The all-star game is on Feb. 3 and will follow the AHL Hall of Fame Induction and Awards Ceremony.
