Boston University has won five NCAA National Championships in hockey so it should come to no surprise that the Terriers are routinely sending players to the NHL Draft.
And that is likely to be the case in the 2024 NHL Draft.
The San Jose Sharks are widely expected to take the top prospect among this year’s draft class at No. 1 in Macklin Celebrini, the reigning Hobey Baker Award winner.
Celebrini, from Vancouver, Canada, helped the Terriers go 28-10-2 and reach the Frozen Four Final in April.

Celebrini will not be the first Terrier taken in the draft, not close. Since 1969, 189 Terriers have been selected by NHL teams. In 2016, the program made history with four player taken in the top 19 of the draft. The only programs that have seen more player drafted are Minnesota and Michigan.
Here’s what to know about Boston University and the NHL Draft.
Macklin Celebrini Would Join Rick DiPietro As BU Hockey Players Taken No. 1 In NHL Draft
Celebrini would be the second Terrier ever drafted at No.1, the first being Rick DiPietro in 2000 by the New York Islanders. The goalie was just second ever taken No. 1 at his position and played until 2013.
DiPietro may be more known for his remarkable 15-year contract he signed in 2006 for $67.5 million. It was, and is, one of the longest contracts in North American sports history. Despite not playing since 2013, DiPietro is still paid $1.5 million every year until the end of the 2028-2029 season as part of a buyout agreement.
