In 1990, the New Jersey Devils selected Martin Brodeur with the No. 20 pick in the first round of the draft and despite having made quite a few picks in the 34 years since, they haven’t come close to topping that one.
But few teams will.
Brodeur was arguably the greatest goal of the 1990s and one of the greatest of all-time. He carried the Devils to three Stanley Cup championships, the first just five years after being drafted, and won the Vezina Trophy four times.
Brodeur holds the record for most wins (691) and shutouts (125) by a goaltender.
This year, the New Jersey Devils have the No. 10 pick in the 2024 NHL Draft, adding to their history of notable first round selections.

Years before they took Brodeur, the franchise began in 1974 as the Kansas City Scouts but moved in 1976 to Colorado, where they became the Colorado Rockies. In 1982, the club moved to East Rutherford, N.J. where they have been ever since.
The first player the franchise ever took was Wilf Paiement at No. 2 overall in 1974. The first pick they made as the Devils was Rocky Trottier in 1982 at No. 8 overall.
Throughout their history, the Devils have had the No. 1 pick several times, most recently using it to draft Jack Hughes in 2019, who has quickly become a cornerstone player for the franchise. Two years later, they took his brother Luke in 2021 with the No. 4 pick.
The Devils haven’t picked a player in the first round since taking Simon Nemec No. 2 overall in 2022.
Here’s a look at the New Jersey Devils first round pick history.
