The Calgary Flames have the No. 9 pick in the 2024 NHL Draft on June 28 in Las Vegas at the Sphere and look to add to their history of first round selections.

The Flames began as the Atlanta Flames and called Atlanta home from 1972-1980. The team made their NHL Draft debut in 1972, selecting Jaques Richard as their first-ever first round pick, taking him second overall. In 1980, the team moved to Calgary where they have been ever since.

Throughout their history, the Flames have never had the No. 1 pick in the draft, making their selections all the more strategic and impactful. In the 2023 NHL Draft, Calgary selected Samuel Honzek, a promising forward expected to make a significant impact.

Arguably the greatest player in franchise history wasn't drafted by the Flames, but by the Dallas Stars at No. 11 in 1995. Jarome Iginla, though, was traded to Calgary about six months later. Iginla is the franchise’s all-time leader in goals, points and games played and will watch his son, Tij Iginla, be drafted likely in the first round on June 28.

Here is the complete NHL first round draft history for the Calgary Flames.
