Utah Hockey Club To Make First NHL Draft Pick. (Arizona Coyotes Fans Nod)

The Utah Hockey Club will draft its first ever NHL player in team history on June 28. The team has a lot of former Arizona draft picks on the roster.

The Arizona Coyotes team history will not move to Salt Lake City, so technically, the team now known as the Utah Hockey Club will be making its first ever draft pick at the 2024 NHL Draft on June 28 in Las Vegas.

It's complicated, but has been done in other sports like football.

When the Cleveland Browns moved to Baltimore and became the Baltimore Ravens, they left the team history in Cleveland and started a new. With the caveat that they somehow acquired all the Cleveland Browns players that offseason.

The first technical pick the Ravens ever made was eventual Pro Football Hall of Fame left tackle Jonathan Ogden. The second pick they ever made was in the same 1996 draft and was Pro Football Hall of Fame linebacker Ray Lewis.

The same situation is happening in Utah, and maybe the Utah Hockey Club us about to select two of the greatest players in league history at their positions on June 28.

The Coyotes ownership retained team history and will seek to bring the Coyotes back at some point. So while Utah has never made a pick, the Coyotes, and before them the original Winnipeg Jets, certainly have.

Arizona Coyotes Were The Phoenix Coyotes. The Phoenix Coyotes Were The Winnipeg Jets

The Winnipeg Jets were founded in 1972 and played until 1979 in the WHA. Then the team joined the NHL in 1979 and played in Winnipeg until 1996.

The team moved to Phoenix in 1996 and were the Phoenix Coyotes until 2014, when they became the Arizona Coyotes.

In 1999, the Atlanta Thrashers were formed and in 2011 they moved to Winnipeg and became the Jets again.

But in both cases, the history of the clubs didn't stay in the departed city.

Who Did The Arizona Coyotes Take In The 2023 NHL Draft?

The last first round picks the Coyotes made were Dmitriy Simashev at No. 6 and Danil But at No. 12 in 2023. Neither will have ever played for the Coyotes as they are currently teammates for the Russian team Lokomotiv Yaroslavl.

Those signing rights now belong to the Utah Hockey Club.
