Team USA captain Rutger McGroarty powered his team to a Group B win on New Year’s Eve as the Americans won Group B at the 2024 World Junior Championships in Sweden. 

McGroarty, the 14th pick of the 2022 NHL Draft, was named captain of the team just before the tournament started. On the last Sunday of the year, he delivered a hat track to close out group play as the Americans crushed Slovakia 10-2 to win Group B ahead of quarterfinals on Jan. 2.

Rutger  McGroarty Makes USA vs. Slovakia a Rout With Second Goal

Leading 4-2, McGroarty scored again off an assist from Cutter Gauthier at the 38:54 minute of the second period.

Rutger McGroarty Clinches Hat Trick In USA vs. Slovakia

Roary McGroarty Plays For Michigan Hockey 

McGroarty was drafted by the Winnipeg Jets in 2022, but te 6-foot-1 Lincoln, Nebraska native opted to play for the Michigan Wolverines before joining the Jets. 

His freshmen season in Ann Arbor was a success as he made the NCAA Midwest All-Region Team. He entered the his college season as one of the leading candidates for the Hobey Baker Award.
