2024 World Juniors: Boston Bruins Loan Matt Poitras To Team Canada Roster
Team Canada WJC roster gets a boost by adding Boston Bruins center Matthew Poitras to the mix after he was loaned by the NHL club Monday.
Team Canada got an early Christmas present Monday when the Boston Bruins announced that forward Matthew Poitras will be loaned to Hockey Canada for the duration of the 2024 IIHF World Junior Championship. A roster spot was left open in the event that Canada would get one of its several age-eligible players currently in the NHL and, sure enough, they did.

Poitras will join a Canadian roster that is light on WJC experience. Though the former Guelph Storm star doesn't have any World Junior experience of his own, he has spent the first half of the season with the Bruins as a standout rookie. Poitras was one of the big surprises of training camp, playing his way onto a roster that desperately needed some center help.
In 27 games this season with Boston, Poitras has registered 13 points including five goals as a 19-year-old. He is currently tied for 12th in rookie scoring in the NHL while averaging just over 14 minutes per game.

Last season, Poitras had a breakout campaign with Guelph, producing 95 points in 63 games.
Poitras has not represented Canada internationally previously at any major international event.
Now that Canada has added its 13th forward, it will impact the top of their lineup. Poitras very well could be Canada's No. 1 center, which is a position currently held by Conor Geekie (ARI). Additionally, 2024 NHL Draft top prospect Macklin Celebrini has been getting reps as the No. 2 center. Poitras's arrival may see Celebrini move to the wing, but likely stay in the team's top six as he was one of the biggest standouts in Canada's recent selection camp.
Poitras will join the team in Sweden. Canada is scheduled to play Denmark's U25 team in a pre-tournament exhibition Tuesday. Canada will also play in two pre-tournament games in Sweden, first against host Sweden on Dec. 22 and next against Team USA on Dec. 23 before opening tournament play against Finland Dec. 26.
