One of the most fun weeks in the NHL preseason is actually the first one, at least if you're interested in getting a glimpse of the future of the league. The NHL rookie tournaments are about to get underway across the United States and Canada, with dozens of the league's teams participating in competitive games that offer a prelude to their main training camps.

This year's crop of top prospects includes the highly-anticipated debut of No. 1 pick Connor Bedard for the Chicago Blackhawks, while we'll also be getting our first glimpses of Leo Carlsson and Adam Fantilli in Anaheim Ducks and Columbus Blue Jackets uniforms, respectively. On top of the high-profile recent draftees, many NHL teams will be putting a number of older prospects through their paces to see how close they might be to making the jump to the NHL roster.

Rookie tournaments rarely end up as a credible referendum on where a player stands, but it's an introduction to the 2023-24 season and a fun one at that. The games are competitive, often physical and there's a real effort on behalf of the players to stand out and make their cases to NHL brass. Every team will have their GMs and executives as well as large swaths of their scouting and coaching staffs on hand to make their early evaluations.

If you want to follow along, many teams will be providing free streams for their games either via their team website or YouTube channels. FloHockey put together a handy watch guide including schedules for each showcase, as well as which notable prospects are expected to be on hand for the events.
