ESPOO, Finland -- Cole Hutson may often get compared to his older brother, newly-minted Montreal Canadiens defenseman Lane, but he’ll have family bragging rights in one particular category.

With an assist against Finland at the IIHF Men's World Under-18 Championship, the younger Hutson became the USA Hockey National Team Development Program leader for most career points by a defenseman with his 112th point over two seasons. He surpassed J.D. Forrest’s 111 points scored over three seasons at the NTDP. Lane Hutson sits fifth on the all-time list for points by a defenseman with 90.

Score one for little brothers everywhere.

The 18-year-old defenseman who will be headed to Boston University next season has been tearing it up at the 2024 IIHF World Men’s Under-18 Championship with points in each game so far. 

Because the NTDP plays a mixed schedule among multiple leagues, tournaments and exhibitions, points in all competitions count towards a player’s career numbers at the program. 

Hutson had 68 points last season as a U17, highlighted by 12 points at last year’s U18 World Championship. 

So far this season he has 44. 

In addition to moving past Forrest and his older brother, Cole Hutson also has more points than No. 2 Cam York, now of the Philadelphia Flyers, and No. 6-ranked Adam Fox, who already has a Norris Trophy win under his belt as an NHL player.

Hutson was recently listed by NHL Central Scouting as the 55th-ranked North American skater for the 2024 NHL Draft. While projected as a potential first-round pick by some outlets, it appears likely he will slide into the second round like Lane or perhaps even into the third round despite his impressive numbers.

The 5-foot-10 blueliner is a dynamic puck mover with an ability to use his good skating ability to create more space for himself. He reads plays well and can find the open man consistently, while also taking chances to stretch the ice with long-range passing ability. Hutson has also shown some more goal-scoring touch this season, already posting two goals at the World U18s as he looks to help Team USA repeat as gold medalists.

Hutson will have a chance to increase his numbers as the U.S. can play as many as three more games at the 2024 World U18s in their quest to end their season with another gold medal.

NHL Network will carry Team USA's games and select others live on television in the United States. Streaming information is not yet available.

How Do I Watch The IIHF World Under-18 Championship in Canada?

TSN is expected to broadcast every game from the 2024 IIHF Men's World U18 Championship with many games appearing on one of TSN's family of networks. The tournament will also be streamed in Canada on TSN+.
